    refractometer accuracy?

I went through the same thing when I first started with sw. I was using the swing arm, which showed a reading of 1.024. When a friend of mine used his refractometer, it showed a reading of 1.029. I don't trust the plastic swing arms. I also found out later on that micro bubbles will...

    Algae respawn

I had my 100g reef looking like a show piece, until I had it professionally moved to my new home. The so-called pros that moved it decided to mix salt directly with well water in lieu of having to cart the original water :x . I was at work when all of this happened. To make a long story...

    Marinedepotlive

Ooops, sorry. Liveaquaria has some pretty bad rock. I've gotten 2 (45 pound) batchs from them and both were nothing more than baserock.

    Marinedepotlive

I was curious about them as well. I've ordered a lot of dry goods from them, but have also experienced a lot of backorders too. I'd hate to see livestock being backordered. I've ordered livestock from Liveaquaria.com (Drs. Foster & Smith) and have had no problems there. However, their live...

    Reef Salinity

Mine is just a little lower then 1.025. Someone once told me that the higher the salinity, the better foam production in your protein skimmer. Makes sense to me..

    long tentacle anemone question

I just put a long tentacle anemone in my tank two weeks ago. Within the same day, my Clarkii clown was doing the happy dance in the center of it. The Clarkii is about a year old and has never seen an anemone before. They're both get'n along pretty well. It's amazing how the Clarkii...

is it better to let sw age

That's really odd, douggiestyle. I wonder why that is?

    Stupid Question

I like the fact that a fuge mimics a more natural environment for your marine setup. I have one myself. Another added benefit is the fact that you can use your fuge for 24-hour lighting to help control the pH levels. When your system goes without light for a period of time, the pH levels tend...

    BASE ROCK TO LIVE ROCK

I totally agree with xahx. I would never put the rock directly in my tank. So far I've gotten 5 different shipments of LR, and each time I've put them in a QT with a strong powerhead for at least 1 1/2 weeks. I even went as far as doing complete water changes on the QT and lightly scrubbing...

Fuge overflow caused BIG electrical short!

I basically had the same thing happen to me last year. My overflow sprung a small leak underneath, where the feed hose connects. Needless to say, it dripped down the wall and into my electrical outlet. The way I found this out was I was in my kitchen and kept hearing popping sounds. I...

is it better to let sw age

I totally agree with mjvincent. The water evaporates, not the salt. I fill a bucket with RO water and keep it in the cabinet under my tank. I've seen some designs for auto-topoffs that I wouldn't mind trying.

    300Watts

You will want about 4 watts per gallon (30g * 4 = 120watts). So basically the 300w would be total overkill.

    Which UV sterilizer to buy?

The sterilizers only kill free floating, single cell organisms. Most beneficial bacteria klings to the substrate and anything else you have in the aquarium. I got one to get rid of my green hair algae and it worked for me.

    Weird stuff from fuge

I get the same thing. I figured it was gunk accumulating in the rigid return line. One day I ran the line under my kitchen faucet. Low and behold, all this gunk came flying out. With my new tank setup, I was thinking of doing PVC as well. Definitely a good idea. The only drawback to that...

    Which UV sterilizer to buy?

I'm not sure which one to buy, but I am sure of which one NOT to buy. You'll wanna stay away from the JEBO. They're cheaply made and they leak like crazy.
