    junk algae in refugium

I agree with Nitrate on the appearance - looks like Cyano, but would need a better pic to discern for sure. Even though your phosphate readings are "0", doesn't necessarily mean they are. As inorganic phosphate becomes available, it is quickly used up and turned into organic phosphate (kits...

    Calurpa is crashing

Just a tidbit of information about macros going sexual. Caulerpa contains a toxin called caulpenyne. When Caulerpa goes sexual this toxin, as well as all the phosphates and nitrates your macro has taken in, will be released into the water (almost like dumping your skimmate back into the tank)...

    Death Row

I know I'm dredging up an old thread, but thought I'd add something to this.... I've read that pistol shrimp click in ones and twos, since it is a predatory attack. Mantis will click similarly, but will sometimes click many times in a row - especially when den building or trying to open a...

    Copepod

You can help the pods reproduce by creating little rubble piles in your tank, out of rubble rock or empty snail shells. You can also purchase detritivore kits from, for example, Inland Aquatics Hope this helps!

    Live Rock Cured .. Precured...Uncured

Not to toss in another term, but there is also "semi-cured" live rock, which is rock that is in the process of being cured. Some claim that the smell won't be as bad as uncured while the process is taking place, and also a lot of bad hitchhikers may have "jumped ship" already. Personally, if...

A question about curing live rock.

Here is a link to a thread I had started on cycling with uncured LR, and hope it serves as a nice supplement to the advice you have already received: Cycling with Uncured Live Rock

    aqua c EV-120

I agree with loganj as far as getting the 180. I had been researching skimmers and I was debating between an AquaC-240 and Euro-reef CS8-3. What I've determined is you really can't go wrong with either skimmer. Both have good customer service, as they were quick to respond to my questions. I...

How soon could I add shrimp or crabs to salt tank that is 1

I agree with reefrunner69. You need to wait until your tank has completed its cycle. Here is an article on >>How Ammonia is Converted to Nitrate<<. Be sure when acclimating invertebrates to take your time. They can be very sensitive to rapid changes. Where ever you purchase your livestock...

    Plenum questions

I personally don't know very many people that use plenums. I have, however, discovered that this is a debateable topic (such as DSBs). You will find opinions on why you should and shouldn't use one. I plan on a DSB in my 120 because the research I have done and I'm most comfortable with one...

New starfish, never seen one like this before?

It may be hard to find an exact match. The only thing you might be able to do, is determine which family it is in and decide from there what it's needs will be. It may of in the Pentaceraster sp. (although I didn't get a pic, I have one in a book) Check the 6th pic down of >>This Site<<...

    crazy purple algae

Another idea you may try is to increase the flow towards the substrate. Maybe angle a powerhead in the areas that it's growing. Sometimes this helps keep cyano at bay.
