I would use ammonia. You can add just a little bit (about 1ML) and test. Then add more based on the test (or possibly do a water change if it was too much)
Try to get close to 2 PPM.
Go to www.cafepress.com and search sacred geometry. They have tons of designs in different sizes. If you email them they might be able to help you out.
blowing through the top is basically the same as sucking on the hose. lol at sillygirl, i think you will be ok. my buddy does it on his 50 ft python and he has no experience.
they will be fine going a week with out food. i would just feed kind of heavy the day you leave and do a water change to get any uneaten food out.
edit: not sure about the goldfish, they dont have stomachs so i dont know if they can go extended periods without food.
once you get the siphon going you should be able to turn the water off and let the siphon action drain your tank.
to get it going without the faucet, just open the valves on the water changer and blow through the top (the part that screws onto the sink) until water starts running out.
you need either a refractometer or a hydrometer to measure salinity. a refractometer is more accurate and easier to read, but cost more. they start at around 30.00 dollars.

hydrometers can be had for around ten bucks. sometimes...
i would put each days food into a labeled bag for the sitter, unless they are very familiar with your setup. what they think is "just a little bit" of food might be way too much.
if you have a fat friend, he could sit on it to see if it will handle the wight. i would guess that a 40 gallon tank would weigh around 400 pounds or less. so maybe two kind of chunky friends?
