How to maintain a fish-less cycle

I would use ammonia. You can add just a little bit (about 1ML) and test. Then add more based on the test (or possibly do a water change if it was too much) Try to get close to 2 PPM.

Who uses the Aqueon Aquarium Water Changer?

blowing through the top is basically the same as sucking on the hose. lol at sillygirl, i think you will be ok. my buddy does it on his 50 ft python and he has no experience.

    Vacation advice

they will be fine going a week with out food. i would just feed kind of heavy the day you leave and do a water change to get any uneaten food out. edit: not sure about the goldfish, they dont have stomachs so i dont know if they can go extended periods without food.

Who uses the Aqueon Aquarium Water Changer?

once you get the siphon going you should be able to turn the water off and let the siphon action drain your tank. to get it going without the faucet, just open the valves on the water changer and blow through the top (the part that screws onto the sink) until water starts running out.

    Moray eel

you need either a refractometer or a hydrometer to measure salinity. a refractometer is more accurate and easier to read, but cost more. they start at around 30.00 dollars. New Salinity Refractometer 0-10%, Aquarium Hydrometer | eBay hydrometers can be had for around ten bucks. sometimes...

    Getting ready...

i would put each days food into a labeled bag for the sitter, unless they are very familiar with your setup. what they think is "just a little bit" of food might be way too much.

The Strength of Pine ("stand" capacity)

if you have a fat friend, he could sit on it to see if it will handle the wight. i would guess that a 40 gallon tank would weigh around 400 pounds or less. so maybe two kind of chunky friends?

    Ryukin Behavior

ammonia should be zero, i would do a massive (60%) water change right now. im guessing you didnt cycle the tank, so you will want to read this.--> I just learned about cycling but I already have fish. What now?! you have a long road ahead of you with water changes, and testing. i would take...

just ordered my fish (and crayfish), im getting excited!!

it is fishless cycled, and i had to order online, thats why so many at once, but im positive my filter and bb can handle the bio load. danios are cheap "testers" i have heard that some crayfish are docile, so if i have luck with the danios not being food, i will trade up for some prettier fish.

just ordered my fish (and crayfish), im getting excited!!

i just ordered two hammers cobalt blue lobsters, and about 20 assorted danios. hopefully there will be enough hiding places in my tank for the lobsters to coexist. its a 40 gallon breeder. friday seems so far away now.

    a few dumb question

i dont think it makes that big of a difference where you put your lights. i have mine toward the back because of the black rubber strip that hinges the two glass pieces of the lid together IME hornwart is a low light plant, i put some in my 60 gal, and it took off like crazy at first, i have...

    Petco $1/gallon sale

i picked up a 40 breeder for 40 bucks. its the stand, light, filter, hood, decor, dw, fish, power strips, cords, buckets, test kits and other random things that cost 400-500 dollars. i forgot how much goes into setting up a tank. this is my first "brand new" tank. everything is new, unlike my...

    Little help?

well, your nitrItes should be zero, not nitrAtes. also i would get the sponge bob decoration out and do at least three or four 60% water changes before adding anything else. even then, i wouldnt add more than a fish or two for a while.

    WARNING-all betta lovers

im thinking guppy lover was talking about Table salt vs aquarium salt. there is a debate that the iodine in table salt is harmful to fish. aquarium salt doesnt contain iodine.
