The brown algae is very common in newer tanks do to the hgih amount of unused silicates in the tank especailly the gravel. Ditto to what tankgirl advised about ottos. They are excellent for dealing with brown algae.
They should grow back. I have a long fin that occassionaly get torn up and they grow back slowly. As for where you got your fish from, I have heard nothing but horror stories from other people that have gotten fish from there. I would personally boycott that place but thats just me.

Hey Oscarbreeder, I have seen a unique color variation at http://www.liveaquaria.com. It was a zebra oscar. I have never seen one sold at a LFS. Thought maybe you'd like that one.
I would try getting it to take pellets. They are more nutritional. Give him as many as he will eat in about two or three minutes. You can give him other foods as treats, but avoid live food. They have barely any nutrional value and you can get diseases passed to your tank from the other.
