I'm no expert like alot of the replies you'll get.....but I researched that same question recently, and read that while play ground sand would work, it is very fine and easily disturbed in your tank...I used pool filter sand which was inexpensive (less than $10) at my local pool supply store...

Had a feeling it was too good to be true....I tested Nitrite again and it's not that beautiful teal like it was 1st thing this morning.....It's not quite to 0.25 ppm, but it's definitely switched away from the teal and into a light blue..... on its way to purple I'm afraid :-( I'll monitor...
