the trets i had got NASTY once they matured even just when they first started to mature. its definitely possible to could work in my opinion but its kinda a shot in the dark
woukldnt the pH be an issues with the barbs and cichlids? i would think so.... i mean over the long run because there really isnt a mutual pH range is there?
my experience with cichlids both s.a, new age, and african cichlids is snails dont last long. the apple snail lasted the longest in my s.a. and new age cichlid tanks. the african cichlids you run into the issues with the pH. as far as i know though no snail really took the onslaught my cichlids...
yeah i tried keeping even the different lakes out of my tank... my pH is actually 8.7 dump some salt in and id have a good dsalt water tank lol.

Ok now it is to my knowledge that you are not ot mix african cichlids and south american cichlids... One of the reasons.... BESIDES the difference in water parameters... was an example i was given
This had to do with the pike cichlid where the african cichlids are not used to being around such...
i am a big advocate of Fluval filters. I have the 404 and it does one hell of a job. My cascade... i have ZERO to say about. it is pretty terrible actually in my own opinion. I have no personal experience with an ehiem but i have heard GREAT things about them. But i will push the fluval.
