    Demon Gourami

It's a five gallon hex -- I think it's a male gourami because of the thin sides and he was with a red-fin shark (little one).

    Demon Gourami

I am pretty sure he killed it. The shark was perfectly healthy before that (good color, active, ate plenty). Maybe it was just scavenging but I get the feeling that the gourami killed that fish to eat it. Sounds weird but maybe. I've thought about buying a danio or something else similar in...

Few big fish or small community fish?

I prefer to get one big fish and pair it with a couple of small ones. Of course, to do this you need some pretty benign fish and don't let the big one start out smaller than the little ones. If they pick on it I promise it will remember and be vengeful.

    Demon Gourami

I realize it seems crazy to theorize on an evil fish but it ate the shark. It was missing a lot of flesh and half its face (I've never seen a fish get mutiliated like that). Is this normal behavior for a gourami?

    Mystery Snail Eggs?

Well normal snails smell funny so I found a good method to figure this out (because I'd thought about the stink thing before). There's water inside the shell. If you press on the cover and the snail doesn't recoil -- probably dead, but to be sure, the water that comes out of the shell is...

    Mystery Snail Eggs?

Oddly my last set of snails all died within the same month. I imagine that they were all probably about the same age though so I don't know that I can't rule out old age. I might have been something in the water but considering I had them spread across a few different tanks I doubt it. Then...

    Mystery Snail Eggs?

No luck on the camera but I'm pretty sure it is snail poo. So next question: what causes snail death and how can you tell if it's really dead? (Sometimes they seem so dead but aren't -- I've just started pulling out suspected deaths and leaving them in a cup for a day or too to see if they move).

    Mystery Snail Eggs?

Come to think of it -- I think it's waste. Let me see if I can find that minicamera I had...

    cichlids or gouramis

Gouramis make better community fish because they're less aggressive. Well... except for my demon fish... but there's just something not right about him.

    Demon Gourami

I had a blue powder gourami (about 2-3") in a 5 gallon tank with a very young red-finned shark. These are the fish I replaced my old ones with after my friend killed all of mine (and it was HORRIBLE -- not for the faint of stomach) over Christmas. Anyway, the two fish got along quite well for...

    Mystery Snail Eggs?

I just put some new mystery snails in my tank (several of the others got old and died) and I was looking at one slide across the side. Behind it there was a trail of white granuals in little clusters and while it seemed they might be eggs that doesn't make much sense because that's not supposed...

    Betta and Chichlid?

I have a male betta, a dwarf gourami, two glofish and a painted glassfish. I have heard Chichlids are very aggressive and eat other fish but I have also heard of people putting them in community tanks. I wanted to get an electric yellow chichlid to add some more color to the tank but I wasn't...

    Betta Fish Questions

I've just read that small, tropical, non-aggressive fish not resembling bettas may also be placed in the tank. I've looked at neon and glow light tetras but I was wondering if there was anything else a little more interesting in appearance that I could put in there. Any suggestions?

    Betta Fish Questions

I recently bought a betta fish (about 6 weeks ago); it was in a little dirty cup at Walmart so I felt the need to rescue it. I just moved it to a 5 gallon hex tank and it seems alright; it eats a lot. I have cat, but the fish is next to my lava lamp so I don't think she knows there's anything...
