- I have a 55 gallon tank with wooden stand. I built a custom canopy to go on top. Underneath the tank is an 18 gallon sump.
Filtration:
18 gallon sump. Overflow box goes to a 4" 100 micron filter sock into the input chamber. There water is skimmed with a HOB reef octopus (BH-100). The skimmed water is fed through a tube to the next chamber so it doesn't get skimmed again until it has circulated through the tank.
The second chamber is my refugium (about 6 gallons) which houses live sand (about 2"), live rock (about 5 lbs) and chaetomorpha macroalgae. This is lit by a 26W 6500k CF housed in a shop reflector (clamp on). The third chamber has my return pump and auto-topoff (with ro/di water resoirvoir). The pump pumps at near full force (609 gph) but really only does about 250 gph with head loss. It pumps into the return tubes which are split with a tee and returns to my tank.
I have about 50 lbs of rock for natural filtration.
