Yes you can, the only reason I mentioned using it in the top tray is because you said that you were interested in using purigen. The purigen is not that large to fill the top tray.

I just switched from the emperor 400's to the AC110's and they are by far quieter. I will say this though, the emperor's are a much better plastic, I was never worried about bumping and breaking it like with the AC's.
