    lighting choice

I have a 10 gal tank with ferns and java moss. The tank is really well balanced right now with the 10W florescent light that came with it--the plants grow great, the fish are great, no algae and all I do is add water when it gets low. I need to move the tank and switch to a clip-on LED but I'm...

    What is this?

Anyone know what this is? I thought it was algae at first, but its purple and now appears to have some sort of gel or bacterial film in it. My 30 gal tank has ghost shrimp, a nerite, Siamese algae eater, tetras, Madagascar rainbow fish and cory cats. is it algae or some sort of...

    Getting carpet plants to carpet

I've got a 30 gal with CO2 and a fluval lighting system. I'm dosing 3 ml of Easy Green 1xweek. Amazonia stratum. The water is pretty soft, pH around 6.6-6.8. I planted monte carlo and dwarf hairgrass. After 6 weeks, I have new growth, but it is definitely not carpeting anything. Individual...

    Otocats and soft water

I had two of my 3 otos die after about a month. My corys and other fish and snails are thriving. I'm wondering if Otos just don't do well in lower pH environments. My pH is around 6.6-6.8 most of the time.

    Material for Custom Lid

For the longer cuts I used a circular saw with a plywood blade (which has pretty fine teeth). To cut notches out for tubing I used a utility knife.

I picked it up at Home Depot.

    Buying Plants Online

Aquarium Co-op has pretty good customer service, although their plant selection is not the biggest. Be careful with the places using USPS for shipping. Mail delays are tough on the plants. That being said, my 2 day delivery took 12 days but the plants were so well packed that I salvaged all...

    How to Adjust Lighting

I went with the lighting setup that starfish615 posted. Here's hoping the siesta in the middle of the day keeps the algae down

    Material for Custom Lid

Tank lid completed So I finally got the plants and finished the tank. No disco ball refraction from the polycarb lid and the plants are growing well.

    How to Adjust Lighting

So I picked up a new Fluval 3.0 Led with all kinds of fancy adjustable features, but I'm not sure how to get the light intensity dialed in so that my plants grow without an algae explosion. I could use some advice on the best approach. 30 gal tank EZ Green liquid fertilizer CO2 ADA aquasoil...

    Material for Custom Lid

I spotted something labeled Multiwall Polycarbonate Sheeting, which is a clear plastic sheeting with ribbed internal channels. It won't warp and cuts easily and about $30 for a 2 x 8 sheet. It claims to block UV radiation. Does anyone know if this UV filtration will impact my plants? Here's...

    Brown Water

Oops. Should be nitrates at 20 ppm (whichever is the not-as-bad one)

    Brown Water

pH is 7.8-8, I'm using R/O water. I can't measure the hardness of the water. Haven't seen any spikes in ammonia or nitrites, it comes back at 0 ppm every time I measure it and the nitrites are at about 20 ppm (hard to read the color chart, but it looks like it is right where it should be). I...

    Brown Water

I have a 10 gallon tank that I put together three months ago. It has a couple little danios and a nerite snail in it and I believe it is fully cycled. Put a new OTB filter on the tank. It has dragon stone and spiderwood in it for hardscape, gravel bottom, and a couple Java Ferns. My water...

    Moving Plants

I'm getting ready to re-scape my 30 gal. tank. I've got some Valliseneria, Pearl Weed, and Hornwort in it. I'm getting a bunch of new plants--dwarf hairgrass, monte carlo, water wisteria, java moss--to add. In order to redo the tank, I was planning on putting the plants in buckets of water...
