It is a toss up . I couldn't reccomend the JD with either a GT or firemouths but firemouths & terrors are usually ok together. I have kept alot of both of those species & it usually works out ok. It really depends on the temperament of each individual fish though. I have had terrors that beat up...
If I cycle my tank at PH 8.2, what my tap water is, will it effect the bacteria colonies when I hook up my co2 & the PH drops to the 7.2 where I know it will end up? I've had this tank & co2 system running before. That's how I know where my PH will end up.
I use API liquid tests for GH, KH, Ammonia, NO2 & NO3. I think its caled a Vita-care test for co2ppm.
My tap water comes out with those properties & diy co2 with no added bicarb lowers the PH.
Those KH/PH charts that give approximate co2 levels are a load of BS & not even close to half accurate...
Awhile back I had a severe infestation of something in a tank that killed all my fish. I suspected a gill parasite & an intesinal parasite but never found anything that helped with the problem.
The tank ended up being totally stripped, everything bleach sterilized & all the substrate & decor...
I have a planted tank with some Boesmani in it. My missus likes the display I have & would like to add some rainbows to her Geophagus tank. It's a 6x2x2ft so we don't really want the bills for maintaining a planted tank of that size, or the initial set up costs of the co2 system & the lights we...
6x2x2 American Cichlid Tank
Central area has real plants. Side 1ft each side are fakes. There are two swords in the centre back as well as a giant anubius to fill that area when they get a chance to grow up abit.
1 x Green Terror, 1 x Geophagus Brasilness, 2 x Pictus, 1 x Goldspot Plec & 1 x...
I'm basically trying to copy the same principle as a canister filter. The whole lot will be below the water line so as to minimise co2 loss. I will probably run co2 into it in fact to act as a diffuser. If it works I will anyway.
I'm just trying to find out if this would be sound in principle as a method of getting some extra biological filtration.
The main chamber would be about 8inches diameter & about 24inches tall.
I haven't worked out the pump size yet but my tank top is at waist height so I'm thinking about...
Don't do anything too dramatic yet & most importantly, don't get too discouraged. We all have tanks that don't work out for one reason or another.
Have you been monitoring your ammonia, nitrite & nitrate levels, KH & GH?What are the numbers?
Are you using CO2?
The first thing you need to do...
If it looks like the 'bubbles' are rising, then that will be exactly what they are. Dry media always contains air pockets that can take time to completely work thier way out of the filter. So long as it looks like the stuff is rising to the top instead of settling to the bottom I wouldn't worry...
I'm not at all familiar with those filter so I can't be positive about what you can do. I would probably look at using the floss & then top it off with a sponge so that the floss can't escape.
I never medicate unless I am positive that I have a problem & what the problem/treatment is so I would not recommend it myself unless you are certain that there is a problem & what the problem is.
The white spots may just be air bubbles or it may be white spot. Look for signs of whitespot on...
Does it look like this?
This is the stuff I am talking about & it can come up anywhere.
The other possibilities I have found are fungal or bacterial growth caused by excess feeding (doesn't sound like you are over feeding), or excess light (more likely).
I assume there is no leftover food when...
