Do you need to clean gravel with plants?

OK, thanks for your advice. I will try not to over feed the fish then, when I get any fish. Do snails help with eating waste? I suppose because they also produce their own waste, they won't make a lot of difference? I just thought that mountain minnows don't need a heated tank but bettas do...

Do you need to clean gravel with plants?

Thank you. I didn't know about mulm before. When you say: "The more input there is in the water column the more that needs to be broken down" By input in the water column, do you mean the more waste in the water from fish and decaying plants? Is the only way to ensure adequate oxygen, to...

Do you need to clean gravel with plants?

Why do they say you need to vacuum your tank to get rid of fish poo, but then if you have a planted tank, you can't clean the gravel because of disturbing the plants? Is it OK for the plants to remove them to clean the gravel and then put back after, or shouldn't you move them? If you don't...

Seen few videos of planted tanks with no filter or water changes.

I've watched a few videos on YT with titles such as this: No Filter, No CO2, No Ferts, No Water Changes - 5 Gallon Nano Dirted Tank. Can somebody explain to me how that works? Do the plants get rid of things like ammonia and nitrates from the water? What happens to fish poo? Why do people...

Is a sponge filter OK for what I want and tank I have?

Well I wouldn't say it was very loud before, as the sponge filter seems more quiet than the previous box type filter, but for some reason it's even more quiet with the airstone and can hear the bubbles more, which I like. I just thought that when I get fish then they might like it as quiet as...

    Starting fishkeeping again after years

I still don't have any fish yet. I've only just bought a sponge filter and modified it to use with an air stone to be less noisy, from a video I watched on youtube and I like it. Want to get the aquascaping right before getting fish. It's looking better as there's bogwood and more plants...

Is a sponge filter OK for what I want and tank I have?

Thank you for the advice. I now have a sponge filter and modified it to be less noisy with an air stone, from a video I watched on youtube. It's just what I wanted. Still don't have any fish yet though. Just some snails who were stowaways on some moss balls. I want to get the aquascaping right...

    Starting fishkeeping again after years

One of the plants in the left corner at the back that's sticking out the water is actually plastic. I got it to hide the filter. Although the filter isn't in for that photo. Sorry I should have mentioned that, but you can't really see the plastic one in the photo apart from what's sticking out...

Can I delete a message, or can Admin do it for me?

OK I just did as a last resort as couldn't find any way to delete a message and couldn't find any information on how to contact any admins. I assumed the report feature was the only way anybody could be asked anything, but guess even you can't remove posts then, if it's still on.

Can I delete my messages, and if I can, how is it done? I accidentally posted this message twice. If there are any Admins on here, can they please delete this post: https://www.aquariumadvice.com/forums/f59/starting-fishkeeping-again-after-years-374778.html

Can you tell what snail this is yet?

Can you tell what this snail is yet? I think there were snail eggs in moss balls I bought, as I had nothing in a new tank that I set up apart from water, substrate and moss balls. One day I squeezed the moss balls and a few days later noticed loads of baby snails. Although they're still very...

Is what I was previously told about growing plants true?

Thank you, that's useful to know I can stay with the gravel. Oh yes, root tabs, I forgot to get those. Thanks for the information. :)

Is what I was previously told about growing plants true?

If I say what knowledge I was given about having a planted tank, can anybody please tell me if it was accurate or if there's anything else I should know? I had a tank years ago with gravel, and bought plants that I didn't even bother removing the cotton wool type stuff around the bottom before...

    Starting fishkeeping again after years

Oh OK. The tank is: 54L, Size 52.8x30.2x46.4cm. I have attached a photo. Still have more work to make it look better. That's a plastic goldfish toy at the bottom from the fish shop, so not toxic. The tank was given to me by a person I had told about my wish to start another tank. I wasn't sure...
