Converting 37 gallon high to planted

I'm responsible for maintaining a 37 gallon (high) freshwater tank at my office. (For any who might have it, this is one of Marineland's Eclipse show tanks, and while it is very streamlined and tidy looking, it is an absolute nightmare to do any equipment add-ons without making it look tacky.)...

Best plants to buy with goldfish in the tank

Goldies also like zuchinni, bananas, oranges, blanched leaf lettuces like romaine, and English peas without the skin. BTW, you are splitting up the gourami and the goldfish soon aren't you? Gouramis are tropical FW and goldies are coldwater fish. . .

Recommendations for books about nano reefs

I've been keeping freshwater fish for a little over a year now, and I love it. I think I really, really want to try a nano reef, somewhere around 7 to 10 gallons. And I really, really want to do it right. Anyone have recommended reading on the subject? I've found a few boards and...

    Stocking suggestions?

Make sure you have lots of hiding places in the 40. A lot of people think gouramis are soley top dwellers, but that's not true - they swim at all levels, and will duck into a cave or a bunch of plants if they feel they need to hide.

    Algae in pond

Thanks for the information. Now, back to the pleco. . . I've seen pond posts before where people say don't put a pleco in a pond - even though they can survive and grow, it's not the optimum environment for them. I've also read that plecos need to have driftwood in their diets. . . how do you...

    Algae in pond

No I haven't tried barley straw. . . where are you getting it? I'm open to anything natural. Thanks for the idea about the durabarrels.

    Algae in pond

I haven't added any marginals to my 160 gallon pre-form yet this spring. I have some floaters (water hyacinth and azolla) but they take up probably less than 40% of the water surface right now. So I have algae. I've toyed with the idea of adding a pleco to the pond (water temp is holding at...

    Moving 20 Gallon across town

You can also use a new styrofoam ice chest (the 99 cent ones from Wally World) to transport fish in and the tank water will stay pretty much the same temp as it was in the tank. Then when you get to the new house, just take the lid off the cooler, and if it's going to be a while (like over an...

    Advice on moving a tank

It would seem to me that if there is live rock and live sand, and the tank is moved with them in it, for all of 10 miles, there shouldn't be a need for the three week settling period. The bio filters and substrate and rock would need to be kept wet, but you could even move some of the tank...

Fish Treatment Advise: white cotton fungus and / or ick.

I've had excellent results with Maracyn (by Mardel) and it's readily available. One tab per 10 gallons for five days- remove carbon from the filter if it's less than 7 days old, otherwise no need to remove the carbon. Water change after the five day treatment. . .

    Air Stone

The thing I would add is when you're talking about fancy goldfish (and I guess any other fish which are waste producers extraordinaire), an airstone or two is a good idea. Sometimes with fancies, you have to adjust your outflow on a good filter to keep from banging them into the glass. . .

    Thoughts on blood parrot cichlids?

I really appreciate the input everyone has given. Regardless of which side of the issue you're on, everyone on this website speaks from the heart, and that's what I count on when I ask for an opinion. :D
