I don't think that it's too much. I have a ten gallon(US) with a 6500K 39 watt compact flourescent(custom setup), and a F15T8 10000K, running for 12 hours a day(2-6 hour intervals), and my plants and fish are doing fine.

Got lucky at home, didn't lose power long enough to have to fire up the gennies. At work, we weren't so lucky. I took a bike ride down to main Schenectady Monday night, as well as parts of Scotia. The only way to describe it was eerie. Jumping Jack's was partially under water when I got there...
