these fish have been together a while havnt they?
im wondering if there may be some sort of infection in your tank and they are harrassing the sick one. did they bother ponyo when he got sick?
maybe theyre reestablishing heirachy now that a member is missing.
cycled tank = you have bacteria colonies in sufficient quantitys to process the ammonia released by your fish through the nitrogen cycle.
although we say the tank has "cycled" its actually building up to a cycle (when your "cycling") which it then maintains. - i think that makes sense?
PH7 = neutral.
PH8.5 = base. (more alkaline (ok not strictly true but true enough for current purposes))
so the water has gained OH- (hydroxide)
aeration can cause a rise in PH as can anything in the tank that is limestone/calcium based.
No HN1 your quite right, while the PH will affect the amount of NH3 the amount of NH3 won't affect the PH. i think i sideswiped myself and didn't actually answer the question which was "why is my PH rising over time".
(and i have exams next week....i really need to pay more attention!. i shall...
just to explain why, its because your beneficial bacteria colonies are in substrate, filter mediums, little bit on decorations. hardly any in water. changing the water will remove the chemicals, dilute whats left without harming your cycle.
yes HN1 is one of the good authoritys :) i was just...
that white stuff definately looks moldy to me.....i cant quite put my finger on the familiarity tho.....but...when it was used before was it used in a f/w or s/w tank?
Ammonia becomes increasingly more toxic in basic (alkaline) water because of ions. There are two types of ammonia ions. The most dangerous is NH3 or ammonia that is unionized. Ionized ammonia is called ammonium and is represented as NH4+. Ammonium is far less dangerous to aquarium fish.
How Does...
clown loaches have a 15 year ish lifespan. and theyre pretty.
on the killifish thing i keep seeing those "magic fish" things. they're killifish and they give a ave lifespan of 3 months (some say 1-2 years)! i have a nasty feeling thats just because they think the people buying these things wont...
we're not saying your a liar. we're just saying its not a name or description we've heard before so we're curious to know what it looks like and what it's characteristics are.
there are tons of different types of plecostomus and most of them just have an L#. i think theres about 20 that are...
mine puts up with super hard water just fine. and he dosnt particuly like it when the goldfish go near his hiding spot but he glares at them and they leave. mine is a big bugger now but although he never comes out to the surface for food he gets plenty. (i use flakes mostly)
just make sure he...
just to recap on what HN1 said - .25 is your max. do not go above and try for zero. water change, water change water change. basicaly put a revolving door in your tank :P
fish + ammonia = dead fish.
giovanni probably wont thank you for it. your gonna have to have some amounts of ammonia while your cycle is kicking off but if you try and keep it that high he's really not going to last long. and its not a nice way to die. once your cycle is done you want zero, nada, zip ammonia. but cycling...
