You didn't do a water change for 2 months. If you think that is a responsible 'cycling with fish' then you are incorrect.

Think of it this way...would you have stuck your kitten in a room with thick smoke and kept him there for weeks? Basically by not testing your water and 'relaxing' you are doing the same thing to your fish. Yes, the tank cycles...

I am not sure if I like the hybrids, but you could always breed with a guppy and see what sort of interesting combos you get. Yours don't look very colorful yet. Are they young?
Most plants aren't that crazy about salt. Some fish don't do well with it either. Probably better not to use it unless you are using it to medicate. Also, most of your beneficial bacteria will not be in your water column, so transferring water to a new tank is pretty much a waste.
Well you could try to fill your tank more so that the water from the hob doesn't splash. I know that as long as I keep my tank topped off, I don't even hear the filter.
