Craigslist is the land of many joys. About three weeks ago I picked up a 50 gal, with stand, gravel, air pump, slate, driftwood, hoses, hoods & lights for $65.

For smaller snails, I've discovered that kuhli loaches eat those things like popcorn. I had a explosion of snails, that must have hitchhiked on plant. I introduced four kuhli loaches not long after, and those snails became nothing more than little decorative shells within a week and a half.

This might be exactly the wrong thing, but my approach would be to simply say, "What's with the tank? It's a mess." And go from there. It's neither overly confrontational, nor overly polite.
