    Fish care w/o electricity, Irmagddon

I have variatus platy fish and nerite snals. When the electricity goes out I am going to turn off all the electric in the house to avoid any weird surges. My main concern is the temperature rise as I won't have any tap water to run. I have bottles of water primed and ready for water changes...

    Fish care w/o electricity, Irmagddon

I am about to get plowed by Irma as I am in the Tampa Bay area. I have battery run air stones but would like advice on water changes, and rising temperatures as it's going to get hot without AC. Any other advice like feeding, etc. would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! ~J

    Fishless Cycle question

Back in June I started my fishless cycle for my new tank. I followed The (Almost) Complete Guide and FAQ To Fishless Cycling found on this forum. I have used that process two other times and have not had a problem but for some reason I have with this one. It began with my Nitrates rapidly rising...

Salt and Trace Elements in Freshwater tank?

I believe my platy fish may not be getting the nutrients they need solely from food and am considering adding a little salt and some Seachems Trace Elements for Freshwater Fish to my tank. I have plants, a nerite snail and fry in my tank. Will they be harmed by the salt and Trace Elements? Does...

    Sick Variatus Platy Female

I know its so hard to really observe fish with just pics and even video. On the right side she is concave especially between the gill and the anal fin. There seems to be a whitish area that you can see best in the first pic. That is also where the fin is clamped. It seems more internal than an...

    Sick Variatus Platy Female

Right now the sick fish is in the Display Tank with the two tiny baby fry and a nerite snail. Should I move the snail and the babies to the Quarantine Tank with the other two platy and one fry? The other fish look great. Have the worms transferred to the babies in utero? I am afraid to try to...

    Sick Variatus Platy Female

My Platy Variatus female is looking emaciated especially on the right side of her body and her right pelvic fin is clamped. She is swimming around fine and is eating and alert. I noticed about the end of September she looked kinda thin but also observed tiny fry in the QT tank she was in and...

    Sand or Gravel ?

Right now I have a light cream colored sand in half my tank and gravel in the other half. I want to switch to one or the other but can't decide. The debris from my driftwood created by my nerite shows up very well on the light colored sand and doesn't look very good. I do weekly vacs but its...

    Having plant issues help?

So the company I bought the lights from said that the rights to the light were purchased by someone not in the aquarium hobby and they were not going to be getting anymore. I also contacted TMC Aquaray so we will see what they say as well.

    Having plant issues help?

No it is a Freshwater White Hight Output LED with 12 watts input and 11 watts output, 6500k, Samsung LED emitters. I did a lot of research before choosing this light as the ones that came with my tank were way too low. If indeed the light is too strong for my low light plants how many hrs should...

    Having plant issues help?

What does it mean when water sprite leaves start to curl under and have brown tips? It is putting up new shoots but they don't grow very tall before they start to turn brown and melt away. I have been dosing my 10 gallon quarentine tank where the plants were held for 5 to 6 weeks with .50 ml of...

Baby Ramshorn Snail Keep or Not?

After doing some research these snails could be miniature ramshorns as their shells lie flat against the aquarium floor. How do you tell the difference between baby ramshorns and the miniature ones? If they are mini ramshorns how soon until they start breeding? I have 3 now.

Baby Ramshorn Snail Keep or Not?

This morning I was inspecting the tank and what do ya know... I now have 2 Ramshorn snails :) Now I have a much better chance of them breeding. What about live plants and Ramshorn? I heard they will destroy plants.

Baby Ramshorn Snail Keep or Not?

I am currently quarantining some plants in a 10 gal. tank that I am also fish-less cycling. I am planning to quarantine fish in it eventually. A day or two ago I discovered a very tiny baby ramshorn snail feasting on some java moss. I am leaning towards keeping the snail but I am not sure as I...

    How much cuttlebone for snails?

I have read that snails need calcium to continue to build strong shells and it seems that many people use cuttlebone in their aquariums as a source. Cuttlebone come from cuttlefish.
