    Bettas and reflections

Hi, this may be crazy, but I've just realized that my new betta can see his reflection in the sides of his ten-gallon (cycled) tank, and that he's patrolling like mad. Is he going to wear himself out? What should I do? Thanks!:fish2:

    Postmortem, please?

Hi, I had a happy, healthy betta for over a year--until two days ago. He was building a bubble next, and was active. But then I noticed that he seemed bloated, despite the fact that he only gets 4 pellets daily. Yesterday morning, he became lethargic, and I determined to do a water change a day...

    Betta not improving--medication advice, please!

Thank you! He is doing better since the antibiotics, but still moving very slowly. (Like me. I totally relate.) After only a year I didn't suspect old age, but considering that he was a "rescue fish," it makes sense. Last night when I was cleaning his tank, I got a closer picture. If you see...

    Betta not improving--medication advice, please!

Thank you! I am beginning to wonder if this may be a case of old age, too. He was a "rescue fish" from one of the awfullest big box pet stores...

    Betta not improving--medication advice, please!

Hi, I have a very unhappy betta with some white around his mouth. I tried Mela/Pimafix, but he still was lethargic and hanging around the filter. The LFS suggested erethromycin, which I have been giving for a week. No more hanging around the filter, but he spends his time sleeping on the bottom...

    Here's a picture--is there a problem?

I have a betta in a filtered 10 gallon tank with two otos. They have been living with me for about a year, and took up residence in the cycled tank when my older betta died. I do a 50% PWC once a week. Water parameters are ammonia 0, nitrites 0, nitrates <5. Ph is ok. There are two live plants...

    What is my betta eating?

Hi, I have a new betta in my (cycled) 10 gallon tank, and, unlike my previous betta, he doesn't seem to like feeding at the top of the tank. When I brought him home, he wouldn't eat the "good" pellets but ate a few flakes. Definitely didn't act like the little vacuum that the old betta was. I...

    Otocinclus feeding advice, please!

Bamboo skewer That is a great idea, and it is working well with my cucumber (soon to be zucchini). :thanks:

    Otocinclus feeding advice, please!

Size of algae wafers Thanks so much for your good advice. I will try some zucchini this week. The algae wafers are ovals, with a long diameter of about 3/4 inch and the short diameter about 1/2 inch. The otos seem to have eaten the green centers out of the ones I have given them so far.

    Otocinclus feeding advice, please!

I have two otocinclus in a 10-gallon, cycled, planted tank that had a outbreak of brown algae. They mowed through it wonderfully, and now the tank is sparkling again. I bought a cucumber and some algae tablets, but don't know how much to put in on a daily basis. Everything seems to...

    How clean is clean substrate?

Hi, I have a 10 gallon tank with decomposed granite substrate, and plants. I was hoping that the plants would eat up the inevitable detrius that accomulates and seems to miss my gravel vac, but no. If I disturb the substrate, stuff swirls around in the water. The water is clear, and the LFS...

    See-through fish?!?

I take it back Thank you! I hope that's what it is. I just fed Rusty, and I noticed that the little fin below his gills was looking clumped and a little thin. First time I have seen that. Is he starting to get fin rot???? Oh, dear. Thanks.

    See-through fish?!?

Fins seem ok... Thanks for resonding--fishkeeping seems to be a very inexact science! If Rusty were a cat I'd know what to do and so would the vet. When he flares, the fin edges seem to be perfectly smooth and rounded. Nothing has changed lately. Food is the same (betta pellets), temp is...

    See-through fish?!?

Hi, I hate being a newbie! Now my 10-gallon tank is in great balance--the plants are eating the nitrates, even. But my betta that I posted about two weeks ago is starting to go transparent! What started as a couple of colorless patches has spread, as you can see by the picture. I got some good...

    Mysterious white patches

Are the white spots fuzzy? Caleb, Thanks. The white spots don't appear fuzzy. I can clearly see the texture of the fins. It looks like normal fish skin, etc., just without color. Bettas change color??? It's enough to turn a fishmother's hair gray(er). Bev

    Mysterious white patches

I posted earlier, wondering if this was Ich, and thanks, everyone, for reassuring me that it was not. But. What is it??? Four days ago I noticed two white patches, showing on either side, where the fins meet the body (picture 1 below). The lfs recommended a water change and dosing with API...

    My first disease--is this ich?

Tank temp Thanks--he really is a pretty fish ( and I think he knows it). ;) At first I thought I was just seeing light through a separation in his fins, but, no, they really are white areas that seem to be running through from one side to the other. The tank temperature is 79-80 F.

Better view of the problem Darn fish won't hold still for a photo! This is the best closeup I could get. Thanks, everybody, for helping me check this out.

    My first disease--is this ich?

My betta has been in his new 10 gallon planted aquarium for a week now, and today he has two white spots on either side of him. Is this ich? He spent six weeks in my punchbowl while this tank cycled, with no problems, so I'm assuming that this came from the lfs with the plants, or...? Ph is 8.1...

Oops, my thank you got sent without its message. I wanted to say thanks for the reassurance about the safety of the pumpkins!

    First ever aquarium!

Thank you! I'm so happy the tank turned out as it did--I was on a budget (who knew a free rescue fish would have such a price tag????). The blue bowl is high-fired ceramic that I made in a class. I thought I'd start my first plants in it, in sterilized soil covered with rocks, but they don't...

    Aiiiieeeeeeeee! Nitrate attack!

The pumpkins Thank you! the aquarium was put together on a budget, and I'm happy it turned out. Those little pumpkins are glass, given me by a friend on Halloween. I just emailed her earlier today asking where she got them, because "seasonal decor" would be cool. And I'm hoping they are...

My Fluval Edge 46L - with photos!

Hi--I liked what you said about the importance of fishless cycling. I, too, just finished cycling my first tank, and you are totally right about making mistakes and correcting them, and learning from them without poor fish being the victims of them!
