    Lighting Upgrade?

Oops, actually I am running 2-T8's right now, not T5's. I believe they are 6700k. I think I'll try adding another fixture just like the existing one and see how it looks after that. I imagine that the plants will not complain :)

    Lighting Upgrade?

I have a 90 gal. tank with about 6 different low light plant species, and would like to add more. Right now the tank is lighted by a 4 foot fixture that I got at Home Depot that contains two T5 32 watt bulbs. I'd like to add more lighting, but am on somewhat of a budget, so I was thinking about...

    fat female swordtail

The same thing happened to me. I had about 4 females and one male, and it turns out the he is pretty busy. They seem to have only one baby at a time, and if you have plants and other hiding places in you tank, the baby should survive.

    In-line heaters?

I have owned a Rena Smartheater for about a month now, and I absolutely love it. I've got an 85g. and have had temperature problems in the past with other submersible heaters. I have it attached as the intake to my XP3, and it is very accurate. It is nice to get the hanging heater out of the...

    Hot Heater

Actually my thermometer is pretty close to the heater. I'll try moving it to the other end of the aquarium. I could probably work on my water flow as well. I don't think the water is moving as well as it should be.

    Hot Heater

Ok, maybe it's just me, but I seem to have bad luck with aquarium heaters. I have a 90 gallon freshwater with a 300 watt heater in there and the temperature runs hotter than what I've set. I've got the thermostat set at about 78, and the tank temperature is usually up around 85. I've tried...

    Question about moonlights---(neilanh influenced me :-) )

Digikits has an ebay store. Check them out here: http://stores.ebay.com/DiGiKits-com-Electronic-Components_LED-Moonlights-More_W0QQcolZ4QQdirZ1QQfsubZ6QQftidZ2QQtZkm They have a great selection, and I have ordered moon lights from them and been very happy with their products.

    Problems with XP3 Filter...

I had a similar problem when I first got my XP3. It finally turned out to be the black hose clamps. I had to use a pliers to really ratchet them down tight, and then after that, everything worked fine. Just be careful when tightening since the clamps are plastic not to break them.

    Python question

If the outlet where the water is draining is lower than your tank, you can turn off the water and it will still drain using gravity to push the water out. I usually start the water flow going then turn the faucet off. It just doesn't drain as fast, but it still works and doesn't use up as much...

Opinion of sellers that send "surprises"

I have had good success ordering plants from www.aquariumgarden.com. They deal only in plants, have good shipping prices, and usually include an extra plant or two with my order. I've never gotten any 'hitchhikers' from them.

Fish breeders in the US - Trying to make a list (online).

Try www.aquabid.com. I haven't bought anything from the fish sellers there, but there certainly is a lot of them to wade through.

Bristlenose Plecos and all that algae

Ok, I need some help here. I've got two bristlenose plecos in my 90 gal tank. They've been there for 4 or 5 months, and I've yet seen them do anything much in the algae eating category. I thought these guys would gobble up that algae, but all they seem to do is hide in rocks during the day...

Found a snail in my tank

I had a big snail problem in my 90 gallon. I got three zebra loaches - they don't get as big as the clown loaches - and they took care of the problem in about 2 weeks. Plus the zebra loaches are fun to watch as they go after the snails.

Partial Water Change - 10 Minutes Solution

Part of a water change is the function of cleaning the substrate as it drains. This is where a Python would excel. You can't clean gravel when you're just siphoning water. I'll stick with the Python and waste a little water in the process.

    thermometers that don't suck?

I recently switched to one of these from the Coralife digital: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Product/Prod_Display.cfm?pcatid=3894&N=2004+113769 I like it better than the small coralife thermometer because this one reads out both in the aquarium temp and air temp. Plus it's got a button for a...

    Changing Ballast

Right now, my lighting system has two 40 wyatt, 48 inch bulbs, and two magnetic ballasts wired in. Those two ballasts get very HOT. Can I change the existing ballast to one electronic ballast? From what I've seen here, electronic ballast is much cooler and that seems like the way to go.

    Water Testing equipment question

I am settting up a new (for me anyway), 90 gallon FW tank, and would like to know how you acomplish getting the water out of the aquarium to run tests on it? To me it seems like a eye dropper kind of approach would work - suck up a test tube amount of water, squirt it into the test tube, and...

    Flake Food Recommendations?

I am just setting up an aquarium after a long absence to the hobby (my last aquarium was in the late '70's). I was wondering what everyone is using as a basic, everyday, freshwater flake food. I'm considering Tetra, O.S.I, Omega One, and of course if you visit their websites, they all say...

New Aquarium and a Little Giant pump

A friend gave me a 90 gallon aquarium that he wasn't using(!) that included a Magnum 350 and a wet/dry filter system that is driven using a Little Giant in-line pump (4-MDQX-SC). Over the last month, I have been getting the necessary hard goods to get it all up and running for freshwater...

    Zeosand substrate?

I'm setting up a new aquarium and want to use pool filter sand as the substrate. I called a local pool supply and they said that the sand they carry is called Zeosand. I checked out this website: http://www.zeoinc.com/zeosand.shtml and it looks like zeosand does contain zeolites. Would this...
