every time I leave the house for business travel, my plants go nuts. Still battling algae daily on a tank in a basement with no windows... just learning to live with it.

I had the exact same problem. I got rid of it by adding more CO2 and light. All the algae magically disappeared. I threw in a bunch of ottos so I wouldn't have to clean up the leftovers.

As for the film, those are probably oils from your fish food. Eheim makes a small, plug-in surface skimmer that will get rid of that in a jiffy!

I had a good talk with a kid in the LFS about algae... he said to push the lights and the CO2... I wasn't doing enough. Now, my Algae is disappearing and for the first time I have (.........see attachment)

I just dumped in some Dr.Tim's one and only nitrifying bacteria sauce...

I'm up for 2 weeks now, and after having way-high ammonia readings, I now have 0 ammonia, and off the chart Nitrites and Nitrates. What's next? Should I add ammonia to the tank or let it go and just wait?

I've had a fully planted tank (fishless cycle) now since Saturday, and my pH is around 5.6. My ammonia is very high. I've read that BB won't grow in water less than 6.0 Am I simply waiting for all my plants to die from ammonia burn? They seem to be ok. I pump a little CO2 into the tank...
