Recommendation for light for low-tech planted tank

I am looking for advice on what to get for a low-tech planted tank, a 40g breeder. I definitely want LED. A timer would be great, but really otherwise I really don't need any fancy features. I am considering these two on Amazon.com but open to other suggestions (or help deciding between...

    Aqueon AT10 Internal Filter Hack

I had an unused Aqueon AT10 internal filter that I repurposed as a secondary filter on my tank. Not a bad filter, good flow, but tiny little proprietary cartridges. I was able to make some simple mods to (1) use better two layer mechanical filter media I already had available (compare the...

    Stocking Advice 20g Tank

Hello, I have a 20 gallon tall tank, reasonably well planted with live plants, and well filtered. Is this stocking plan reasonable? Neon Tetra = 6 Red Wag Platy = 3 Cory Cat = 3 Shrimp = 5 Nerite Snail = 1 Based on the general 1" of fish/gallon rule of thumb, I should be safe, and I...

    Very sick betta....what's wrong?

This betta is in a 5g tank, ammonia/nitrate/nitrate readings are all normal, no other fish but a few moss balls. He is hanging out on bottom, not eating, fins either not extended or something wrong with them.

    I unexpectedly have babies??

I have a tank with only neon tetras, ghost shrimp and platys...I believe the platys are the only live bearers. My LFS assured me that all three are females. Maybe one was pregnant when I added her? Sorry for the poor photo, they are tiny! Any advice on what to do?

    Platys Eating My Plants?

I have a 20g planted tank with three Red Wag Platys, who seem to be eating my plants (2 - 3 different varieties). I can see the pecking on leaves, and there appear to be big chunks of leaves missing. Is that normal? Does that need I need to feed them more? I don't want to overfeed.

    Height/Placement of Filter Intake

I have a fairly tall tank (20 gallon hex), with a HOB filter. The bottom of the filter intake is about half way down the tank. Is that enough, or should I try to find some type of extension to get it closer to the bottom? Will a longer intake tube reduce flow or strain the impeller?

Best Way to Test Water Quality?

In most of the posts I see, members are quoting quantitative results for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, etc. (e.g. xx PPM). I am using Tetra 5-in-1 strips that have a subjective color chart, and frankly I'm not sure of the results at all. What test system would you recommend? I have a...

Tetras and Platys No Longer Going to Top to Eat

I upgraded from a small 5 gallon tank to a 20 gallon hex tank (it is tall). Previously my tetras and platys would go right to the surface to eat (I feed fish flakes). Since upgrading, they swim at mid level but either don't see or ignore the flakes at the top, and just try to catch sinking...
