    Swapping filters while cycling

Good question about how long the new filter media would need to load up. My guess is a week or two, but I don't have any evidence to back that up except that when I set up a QT tank I'll put my QT filter in my main tank for a week or two ahead of time and haven't had any trouble. Of course...

How often do you do water changes? How longs has the tank been established?

55 gallon stocking and using LiveAquaria.com

Thanks, Bige for the info - very helpful to know about the shipping! I called my lfs and found out that they actually have gold barbs in right now so I think I might try getting a few more first and hold off on anything else.

    55 Gallon help

I just bought a replacement 55 gallon tank from Petco and it was just about $100. I called around to a few stores (Petco, Petsmart, etc) to see who had what in stock and how much. I live in a metro area though so it was easy for me.

    moved my fish tank

I think you are right to be concerned. Chances are, it's probably fine, but better safe than sorry when there is a lot of water (and fish) involved. This thread from last spring may be helpful to review for some ideas about using shims...

    moved my fish tank

Is this your 35 gallon? I would be less worried about a 35 gallon tank being uneven than a larger tank, but still that is a lot of water if there was a catastrophe. What kind of stand do you have?

55 gallon stocking and using LiveAquaria.com

Here are some photos of the tank - I thought they might inspire some more conversation in this thread. ;) The first two are the tank. It's a little emptier looking than normal because a few of my smaller driftwood pieces, a cave, and some new plants are in my 20-gallon long QT tank (see third...

    Re-starting my 80g fw

As a huge cory fan, I do want to point out that your cories will be much happier in a group larger than three (per species). I would go with at least 6. What kind of cories are you thinking of? My favorites are Panda cories. :D

    How often to change water

Also, I don't know which companies will ship to S. Africa, but I've found that ordering the master test kit online is WAY cheaper than buying in a local fish store. For example: Aquarium Water Testing: Aquarium Pharmaceuticals Freshwater Master Test Kit

55 gallon stocking and using LiveAquaria.com

What's your experience with how well they school? I just looked into them a little bit and it looks like they enjoy being in a larger school (10+)... I don't think I have that much room. Also, I worry Danios would jump out of the tank as it's not fully covered.

    Any Low Light Plant suggestions?

+1 I'm no expert on plants, but from what I've read it sounds like a lot of plants like about 10hrs a day of light, not just several hours in the evening.

    holiday weekend worries

Have you ever thought about buying one of those battery operated (or electric) automatic feeders? I own one but haven't actually used it yet. I guess you'd want to try it out ahead of time to make sure it works but they are available and aren't terribly expensive: Fish Feeders: Automatic Fish...

Brilliant! I didn't know about this and will definitely give it a try. Any suggestions on what type of fish?

55 gallon stocking and using LiveAquaria.com

Hi all, I have two questions. The first is what have people's experiences been with using sites like LiveAquaria.com? I'm considering making a fish purchase (have the opportunity to split the shipping cost with a friend) and am curious to know how the fish usually fare during shipping. Do...

    Vacation Feeding Advice

One other thing you could do if you're worried about helpers' overfeeding your fish is put the exact portions for each tank for each feeding in individual plastic baggies. That obviously won't help for the tank that you normally gravel vac afterwards, but could keep an overzealous fish feeder...

Moving to my new home and looking for advice for moving tank

Definitely keep your substrate and filter media submersed in tank water as MichaelsLilGray suggests. Five gallon buckets for fish transportation is great but I would definitely use more than one bucket. Otherwise, it could get a little crowded in there. You might also consider feeding a...

How best to feed a cory

I also break up the wafers and spread them out. I usually give one wafer for all of my bottom dwellers (about 6 cories and a dwarf pleco) I sometimes have my barbs or gouramis go after shrimp pellets, but not usually the wafers! On some days when I'm not feeding wafers or pellets, I'll feed a...

I was advised against switching to sand

I recently bought a much larger net than I've ever had before -- it's probably about 8" or maybe a little wider. It makes catching fish so much easier!

How long do you QT your new fish?

Wow, 1 year is a long time. I wonder what the rationale for that is? Are there certain viruses that tend to only occur at certain times of the year? I'm skeptical - maybe it is just a good excuse to have more than 1 pond!

How long do you QT your new fish?

Hi all, I bought a few panda cories about a week ago and they are currently doing well in QT. I was planning to keep them in the QT tank for another two weeks (for a total of three weeks). I'm curious to know how long people on here usually QT their fish for?

Empty 55g, what kind of community would you build?

If it were me, rather than going for so many different schooling fish, I would plan to just have one or two larger schools. Otherwise, you might be tempted to overstock. Rams and tetras sound great. I would go with either rummynose or black neon tetras (not both) and then drop either the...

top cross bar on a 55g tank

Haha - yes, that was me! I wholeheartedly agree about getting in fixed. In my case, I just opted to go with a brand new tank since I was worried about the integrity of the glass. If yours isn't bowing out yet though, fixing it sounds like a much cheaper option! Have you heard back yet about...

    Rubber lip plecos are lazy

I like my little rubberlip. He spends a decent amount of time doing algae cleaning of both the tank and plants. He also loves to hide out in the caves I've built him or under driftwood. What other fish do you have in the tank with him?
