    Cichlid planning

Kribs are native to the rivers and streams of west Africa and are not brackish, to my knowledge. I wouldn't expect them to be very tough to come by, as they are a fairly common fish. You could keep dithers with them, but I'd look at schooling tetras, rasboras, danios, etc. (Something that...

    Green Severums

It's possible to keep angels and sevs together, but you'd need a bigger tank than the 55g.

    Kribensis

Cichlids will often become territorial upon reaching sexual maturity. The cories are occupying the same space as the krib, so he may now see them as intruders in his space.

    soft water

In my exerience, it's better to keep the water stable, rather than trying to "fix" it. I've kept rams many times in what I like to refer to as "liquid concrete"-- tap water with a pH around 8 and very high KH and GH levels. Granted, I did have to use distilled water to soften it a bit for...

    10 gallon tank?

Not sure what your room temperature is, but rams need to be kept at least in the upper 70s (77-80F).

    Oscar tankmates

I'd have to say you're at maximum level with just the one oscar, let alone adding any other fish into the mix.

    Anyone keeping Lamprologus similis?

Get at least six, but you could easily go with a dozen. Just make sure you add them all at the same time. Multis do not tolerate intruders in their colonies and those colonies get set up pretty quickly.

    Anyone keeping Lamprologus similis?

If this is your first time with shellies, I highly recommend multies. Not to take anything away from the simis, but multies have all the great characteristics of the shell dwellers and are very colonial oriented. Some of the others tend to pair off and don't exhibit the "family" behaviour of...

    Combining food

It wouldn't hurt anything, but I don't see it helping much either. I try to vary foods day to day, so the fish don't get bored with the same thing over and over.

    Cichlid breeding

Triazole is exactly right. You wouldn't have any problems keeping a single con, but a male and a female WILL make many thousands of babies, not to mention terrorizing other tankmates in the pursuit of parental duties.

    Dimidiochromis compressiceps

Have you checked on Aquabid yet? The ACA has listings for breeders; someone there may be able to help you out.

    Dwarf cichlid pair

And you'll want to make sure the tank is FULLY cycled before adding any Apistos.

    Dwarf cichlid pair

Cacatuoides are a great "starter" dwarf.

    optimum water hardness for multies?

IME, it doesn't have to be super hard or alkaline (unless you're dealing with wild stock). Keeping it stable and of high quality seems to be much more important than having it "perfect". What's your tap water look like?

    GBR pair tankmates

I'd move a pair to the 10g tank. They're one of the few dwarfs that do form pairs, so an odd female may not be tolerated too well. Tankmates really depend on how your pair behaves. You can have the problems bs6749 mentioned (I have). However, I've also used tankmates to stimulate the...

    Egg crate

Not only does it protect the bottom of the tank against shifting/falling rocks, it also disperses the weight of the rock so the load is more evenly spread across the tank's bottom. IMO, it's a really good idea whenever you're using a substantial amount of rock in a tank.

    Newbie to Cichlids, apisto questions

Yes, a 10g will be large enough for the trio, but you will have to stay on top of your water changes. All Apistos need excellent water quality. With the exception of a few species, dwarfs are harem spawners. They do not pair off. Males are constantly looking to breed, so having only one...

    Newbie to Cichlids, apisto questions

Cacatuoides are a great choice. Go with a reverse trio (one male, two females).

    sand or gravel

Sand. Africans love to dig/sift in it and it's easier to clean and keep clean than gravel. I tried sand about five years ago and I'll never go back to gravel.

    Newbie to Cichlids, apisto questions

Varied diet is best: flake, pellets, frozen, freez-dried, live, etc.

Would these fish work together in a 20-gallon long aquarium?

With the exception of the J. dickfeldi (which do stay small), the size information you've gotten is way off base. Some of those will be in the 3 - 4 inch range, but more importantly, you've got to take territory and aggression under consideration. The list you've mentioned simply will not work...

To Dither or Not to Dither, that is the question!

Hmmm... I'd try to increase the school, or add another group of dithers. My guess is they're isn't enough activity going on, so the geos are laying low.
  23. V

To Dither or Not to Dither, that is the question!

How big is the tank? The six fish may not be providing enough "action" for the geos to feel safe.

    Yellow Labs?

They're peaceful by mbuna standards, not by community requirements. I would NOT attempt keeping them with discus or checkerboards.
