    Java Fern

I think one has to try to kill Java fern. My otos and shrimp love it! I pulled about a basketball volume out of my thirty long, leaving behind several clusters that cover almost half the lower volume of the tank. There are other clusters in my quarantine tank and my kid's 2 gallon hex that...

RCS deaths....where did I go wrong?

errr, I think the RCS thread got hijacked.

    Aquarium sand problems

I really like the search feature the question I had and the answers were all pretty much taken care of by this thread. I prerinsed "half inch deep in a 10g" amount of play sand in a bucket for twenty minutes and had the water running clear from the bucket, but the tank has that thin white look...

    What is this fish called?

be sure to check sources of your fish if you follow through on it. They are somewhat endangered in their native waters as wild fish are collected for the aquarium trade. Breeds of this fish type demand prices like the fancy koi in many communities.

Penguin Filter Completely Stopped Working - Cycling Tank

big fan of the Aquaclears too. I had 50's when I had 10g and have now put two on a 30 long. I've even attached a hose to one to pull water further to the left from the return, creating a right to left current in the tank. I don't know that Penguin products don't have ease of media...

    suggestions for positioning floating plants?

I made a surface barrier out of a piece of foam like a pool noodle that is used for insulating hotwater pipe. I placed it so that it prevents floating plants from drifting over some java fern and crypts. It's the depth of the tank (12''?) (front to back) about an inch wide and an inch tall so...

    Too many fish?

what kind of algae eater is it? an actual chinese or siamese or some catfish? some of them can easily outgrow a 10 gallon with a few months time. . .

    Are live plants messy?

I had a green out in a month-aged 29 gallon I started with a HOB cannister. It has a twin fluorescent hood and some sun exposure. You couldn't see the back of the tank from the front! I added two bundles of anacharis, a bundle of hornwort and a couple of crypts on a monday! By that friday, it...

Thought I would post up some pictures of my pond

my cousins stocked an old farm pond with blue cats and that's all that's in it now. Each about 10-20 lbs. The have to lurch up into the shallows to forage - with their fins out of the water. while they enjoy a rich catch and release system, without the supplemental fish feed, they'd have...

    neon with lockjaw?

I found the second neon I've had with what seemed like some sort of lockjaw. It was unable to close its mouth fully and seen from the side, it appeared to protrude from the rest of its body like it had a cigarette. No other species of fish showed signs of this. the tank is a 30 gallon...

Gill plate rate in female GBR

This makes for a good example of international standards in measurement for my students. Fun with symbols! 30 gallon 'long' tank. it's a long tank rather than a tall so I get a hefty amount of air exchange. the GBR is a german blue ram pair I'm hoping it's just stress - and a kind that will...

Gill plate rate in female GBR

I just got my first pair of GBR's. The male is fine. He's about 3 inches and started eating as soon as I introduced him to the 30Long community tank I have with tetras, rasboras and cories. The female is about 2 inches long and still fairly narrow/long - I'm assuming she's a few weeks/months...

top cross bar on a 55g tank

for the DIY person out there, would it be possible to construct a canopy that acted in a similar fashion to keep the front and back panel a fixed distance apart? Kind of a collar? Although if you can get a new top fram for $15, that'd probably be simpler and cheaper.

Too much for my 20 gallon?

2nd the "too much filtration doesn't exist" as long as you aren't off gasing your CO2

    mad props to the LFS

I found some panda cories at my LFS the other day and went back a day later to purchase them. had I gone to a box store, I'm certain that the average employee would have simply bagged 'em and handed them over. the guy at my LFS said he'd love to sell them to me, but tetras in a neighboring...

    Are Aquaclears good filter systems?

I like the aquaclear for the recycleable sponges. I keep a few extra to change out periodically as the bottom sponge gets clogged with tank debris periodically. I don't like that most other HOB brands have disposable filter media. I've run the charcoal and nitrate reducing media a couple of...

    pepper cory vs bronze/green

I checked the ammonia and had my more color discerning wife double check my colors and on the API kit, it came out yellow/0ppm ammonia. The shrimp are fine in there as well, most threads I've read imply that shrimp/invertebrate health are fair indicators of tank conditions. The barbels on...

    pepper cory vs bronze/green

The barbel condition was not determinable. water conditions: with the pH a hair above 7 (colorimetric scales aren't all that) and the KH a few degrees up, I didn't think there'd be a significant ammonia count. ammonia concentration should push the pH up considerably. The tank is a 30 gallon...

    pepper cory vs bronze/green

in the last two weeks, I've lost both of my Pepper Cories, but my green/bronze cories are doing fine. The peppers were almost a year YOUNGER than the others. Is there anything out there disease wise that affects one cory set over the other. Rest of the tank is tetras/rasboras/danios/otos...

What to do about Canada Geese

And it may be good to note that prior to eradication of larger predators down to bobcats, geese couldn't have become year round as the nestlings wouldn't have made it to adulthood. Thus the successful model was to overwinter in southern marshes in which predators could not move effectively and...

    Outdoor water bowl

I don't have an answer for you, but I do have a few thoughts/questions. 1) have you tested the water itself for the usual tank (bioload produced)pollutants? 2) does anyone know if fiberglass leaches chemicals into the water -type of rocks too? 3) does the bowl sit in a sunny spot that would...

    30g additional tank mate questions

Harlequins! The LFS keeps them with some 4-5" angels in a display tank. I think they look bigger than they are and that may be the trick to their cohabitation.

Need help with mean oscar! PLEASE HELP!!

Oscars don't share, even when they are the same size. You probably need one less oscar OR one more tank. (or maybe a really large tank?) How large is the tank they are in?

    shimp bailing out?

thanks for the replies. The lone shrimp seems okay, he hids in the Java Fern majority of thetime. I'm going to pull the rest from the 5gal over and probably convert the 5 gal to a RCS breeder once summer gets here and I can meet the delivery clerk at the door.

    Get water from a dehumidifier?

the condensate would also gather any fine particles in the air that could include spores as well as other organic debris that would function as nutrients for bacteria - I second the movement to apply that water to plants and not aquaria.
