    Dead Filter Motor

The motor went out on the Hagen Aquaclear Power 30 filter I had on our 10 gallon. What's the best way to ensure the bacteria in the filter stays safe for a few days while I get a new filter? Also, do I have to get the same filter again to put the same filter media in, or if I switch filters is...

    New Tank

Sweet! Thanks for the suggestions. If I get around to that this weekend, I'll post new pics on Monday. But, another question: Is it true that higher K ratings on bulbs result in more algae growth?

    New Tank

I'm not exactly sure how I forgot a hood and a light, but that's a pretty solid idea. Thanks for the suggestions, everybody. I think I'll get some more silk plants and definitely a light, but I'm not sure on the background still.

    New Tank

I think a piece of driftwood would look pretty nice, but I've heard they can be a pain to prepare for adding to a tank. The background is also a good idea. Would you go with a solid color (do you use construction paper or what?) or something more fancy?

    New Tank

Hey, everybody. It's been a while since I've posted. I got out of the groove without having a place to have a tank set up. But, we're in a house now and just set up our first 10 gallon tropical tank. The cycle just finished the other day, so it's now stocked with four rummy nose tetras and a...

    Power Outage Effects

I've finally got our goldfish into his 10 gallon tank. It's being filtered by an Aquaclear 20. During the summer, storms and power outages aren't uncommon. Normally I have to pour water into the filter to get it started. If the power goes out, then comes back on later and no one is home...

    Tank Bottom

That definitely doesn't look like something that should be called egg crate, but it'll do, thanks!

    Tank Bottom

I'd heard of using the egg crate, just wasn't sure of what material it should be. Like, I can imagine that cardboard would be a bad idea.

    Tank Bottom

What's an appropriate material to put at the bottom of the tank to keep gravel substrate and decorations from scratching/breaking the glass without letting anaerobic bacteria develop?

    Dorm Aquarium?

I'm looking at doing the same thing. What would be the procedure for moving a 29-gal freshwater aquarium home for break?

    Training Goldfish

Watching a couple of those videos makes me think it would be next to impossible to train a fish without insanely overfeeding it. From what I can tell, you guide it with the food wand (a tasty morsel at the end of a stick) to do the tricks. Upon completion, you let the fish have a nibble and...

    Tank heating up

Air movement over the surface of the water will speed evaporation and thus cool the water more quickly, so a fan blowing over the tank wouldn't hurt. But it's probably worth giving your heater a good inspection and making sure it's not working too hard.

    Need advice

Patience is definitely key in this hobby - rushing into things will likely result in dead fish and a lot of frustration. Take things slowly. Remember to always research your purchases (you're always welcome, and recommended, to post here with your plans) before buying them. You don't want to...

    St. Louis Fish Stores

Today was our visit to Aqua World on Gravois. The tanks (and fish) were in a lot better shape than at TWP. Only a couple tanks had dead fish at all, and there were only one or two dead in each. At TWP, I'd say about half the tanks had dead fish, and of those the majority of the fish in them...
