I think a piece of driftwood would look pretty nice, but I've heard they can be a pain to prepare for adding to a tank. The background is also a good idea. Would you go with a solid color (do you use construction paper or what?) or something more fancy?

I've finally got our goldfish into his 10 gallon tank. It's being filtered by an Aquaclear 20. During the summer, storms and power outages aren't uncommon. Normally I have to pour water into the filter to get it started. If the power goes out, then comes back on later and no one is home...

Air movement over the surface of the water will speed evaporation and thus cool the water more quickly, so a fan blowing over the tank wouldn't hurt. But it's probably worth giving your heater a good inspection and making sure it's not working too hard.
