For various reasons rainwater is not a viable method for me. I have been looking at Nitrate removal sponges but as they seem to remove nitrite as well, will this kill my cycle by starving the nitrite eating bacteria?

Thanks guys, just restocked the tank with various community fish. To be honest it's quite nice to have some fish and not worry about them being killed. I can also have plants now too. I enjoyed having the lobster but it was a lot of hard work keeping the tank clean and with no algae eaters...

@HN1 lol I already thought of that but amazingly European legislation says that Nitrate levels below 50ppm are acceptable. In the US I believe it has to be as low as 10ppm which would be superb. I don't have a de-nitration unit, way too expensive. I have a nutrafin master kit with drops etc...

Well it looks like my lobster story is over, he hasn't been eating very much for the past couple of weeks and when I woke up this morning he was dead :(. Not sure why he died as he was only around 2 years old.

Got to agree, that tool is really handy. Substrate has now been ordered. Unfortunately not the black moon sand as I couldn't find it online. However I have ordered Unipac Limpopo Black Aquarium Sand which will not look as good but will create the effect I'm looking for. I live near the beach...
