would two aquclear 30's be overkill?

I have two young bristlenose plecos and an african clawed frog. Water is not perfectly clear though because of decayed plant mater. Needless to say I am done with real plants in aquariums. :/

would two aquclear 30's be overkill?

I have a 29 gallon aquarium with an aquaclear 30 filter on the left side. I was thinking about adding a second of the same size on the right side. would this be too much? Seems like the one I have now is working really hard.

African clawed frog and rubber lip pleco, can it work?

I have a 29 gallon with sand substrate. it has a couple decorations, a driftwood, amd a small plant. All I have living in there right now is a 6 year old female african clawed frog. I used to also have a pike cichlid and bristlenose pleco, but an apparent amonia spike caused by my brothers...

    Aquaclear or Marineland?

Thanks for the advice. Ill go ahead and get an AC for the new tank as well. :) My current filter has the basic setup. I have one sponge, one carbon, and one bio. I have the adult frog in there but soon to be bristlenose pleco hopefully. the new smaller tank will have albino frog for now...

    Tank Mates For an ACF?

I have a 3 year old African clawed frog in my 29g tank. I have had fish before, but they either attack him, or he eats them. Oddly enough, I had a young pike cichlid for a while and they got along for some reason. I want to get a bristlenose pleco, but I am wondering if there is anything else...

    Aquaclear or Marineland?

I just acquired a 20 gallon tank with one of those simple filters they usually come with. I have an aquaclear filter on my 29g and I love it. It is quiet, but does an excellent job of keeping the water clean. It's rated for 30 gallons. I wanted to get 30 gallon filter for this new tank...

    African Clawed frogs, cannibals?

I have not posted in a while, had a lot going on, including the death of all my fish after a water change. :/ Still have the African Clawed frog though, which brings up my question. I was thinking about getting an albino to put in there with him. I have a 29 gallon long and my ACF is my only...

    Sudden Bristlenose Death!!!

The goldy was in the tank about 2 weeks before the BN's demised. A week or more before that I went from rocks to sand substrate. The Pike Cichlid (still not sure it may be a dwarf.) would sometimes nip at the fins of the goldy if it got too close. One thing I noticed was that the goldfish...

    Sudden Bristlenose Death!!!

I dont know what happened. I came home today and he was dead. Everyone else seems to be ok. The water is cloudy. MY dad got my lil bro one of those carnival goldfish, you guys will kill me, but I put him in with my own fish. I wonder if this had something to do with it. I am really sad now I...

    Any Low Light Plant suggestions?

I may go to the LFS store today (If I have money) and get Java Fern. I also want to get sand to swap out with the gravel. Things are very tight at the moment financialy though so I may not get anything. I post on here what I decide to go with as well as pics when I get done! P.S. If I...

    Are Aquaclears good filter systems?

I wanted a better filter than the one that came with the tank kit, so I went to my LFS to look at better ones. They had Tetra Whisper systems and Aquaclear systems. The employee suggested I go for the aquaclear. I have had it for over a month and like it so far, but how fast should I have the...

I was advised against switching to sand

Thanks for all the replies. The sand I was looking at was a green colored sand. I am not sure of the brand. If this seems like a bad idea I will go with the PFS. I need to figure out the best way to do the swap without killing the fish. I was thinking about manually removing the water and...

I was advised against switching to sand

I currently have gravel and was thinking about going to sand. The people at the LFS advised against me getting sand in a freshwater tank. I was told it would mess up the chemical composition of the tank and be very hard to take care of. Is it a good idea to go to sand? If so, what is the...

    Any Low Light Plant suggestions?

Not sure on the spectrum at all. During the day I would leave the light on, but off in the evening since the tank is in my room. I turn the tank lite off first..then I turn the light off in my room when I go to bed. This kind of simulates an evening to night transition in the tank. I will...

    Any Low Light Plant suggestions?

I started a thread several days ago about how all of my plants died. Most people I talk with seem to think it is a lighting problem. I have a standard 24" 18W aquarium bulb in my 29 gal tank. I could either get a light specially designed for aqua plants, but how will that affect my fish...

Is this definatly a pike cichlid?

Thanks for all the helpful info tony! I will probably hang on to it for a while then because if it is a dwarf there is no reason to get rid of it. One thing is for sure:the little fish is a voracious eater. I am hoping it is a dwarf so I can keep it. Thats what I am leaning toward since he...

Is this definatly a pike cichlid?

Funny you say that because that bottom one is an old pic. And every plant I had died accept for one. Its hit or miss at my LFS, only 2 people that work there really know a lot about fish and plants. If they arent there, i usually leave empty handed.

Is this definatly a pike cichlid?

Thank you much for the link that was a very interesting article. A problem that I am having when searching for photos is that there are so many types of pike cichlids. Most of them are very similar. I do apolagize for the bad pics. I am not the best photographer when it comes to fish tanks...

Is this definatly a pike cichlid?

Yea, thats why I wanted confirmation on here. I should not have gotten a fish when I had no clue what it was. The person working there had no idea but said it was probably some small to mid size fish..at most semi-aggressive. He has shown no agression thus far other than a small scuffle with...

Is this definatly a pike cichlid?

I finally uploaded a couple pics to the computer. The people at the pet store didnt even know what he was when I got him. I went back a week ago with a pic and finally got someone to identify him as a pike cichlid. I have a 29 Gal with African Clawed Frog, Bristlenose, and Upside Down Cat. The...

All my plants died....water test was fine.

I just can't keep plants alive in my tank. Had my water tested as I do weekly and nothing bad was found. The people at my LFS said it was probably because I need a light specifically designed for plants. I am thinking i want to give up anyway and just go with fakes. But the fakes seem so...

My mystery fish is a Pike Cichlid! Am I in trouble?

Long story short....i was at the pet store a couple months ago looking for a new fish to add to my 29 gallon. I saw a fish that go my attention. He was in with the store's upside down cats. The person at the store could not identify him at the time because there was no label. She suggested...

    Best way to change substrate?

I currently have rocks and a few plants on them....I would like to go to sand....partly since I have a new mystery fish that I think may be a black striped loach (long story there). Whats the best way to take out the rocks and add sand? without harming the fish. my current animals: African...
