    Algae & phosphates

That's a good idea to use a pump. Currently I use a python attached to the laundry room sink. A 40% change takes close to an hour :/ what type of pump? Sent from my iPhone using Aquarium Advice

    Algae & phosphates

Ok good points, I'll start doing changes weekly and hopefully that will bring down the levels and slow the algae. Thanks for the input! Sent from my iPhone using Aquarium Advice

    Algae & phosphates

I need some advice. I have a well stocked Malawi 240 gallon tank that has 2.0 phosphates. My lace rock is constantly growing a dark brown algae that makes the tank look dirty. lighting- My T5 lights are only on for 3 hours a day now, and the bulbs are changed regularly. filtration- I have a...

    Help ASAP- fish breathing rapidly!!!

I have a 70g tall tank with exclusively lake tanganyikans. It has been set up for over 7 months and very stable other than routinely high nitrates (probably from not enough water changes). I went out of town for 2 nights and my fish sitter over fed the tank, visible food material on the bottom...

Sick vertical head down red zebra

Hikarri cichlid excel sinking pellets, 240 gallon with all Malawi Africans and 4 clown loaches, her tail fin looks smaller than normal but not nipped or ragged or anything fluffy on it. Parameters are all good except high nitrates, but that's nothing new unfortunately, battling with my sump over...

Sick vertical head down red zebra

My full grown red zebra has been swimming vertically for over two weeks, with effort she is able to come to the center of the tank and attempt to feed from the vertical head down position, although I can tell she has lost weight so maybe not eating as well as she should. At first about a month...

Stocking a 100 gallon with Africans

I have a 240 gallon with Africans and I have 4 clown loaches in with them and man are they thriving, and do a good job of clearing up after feedings. It's almost like the Africans know they're not "one of them" and hardly even bother responding to the loaches lack of respect to the Africans...

DIY Sump for a 240 gallon tank

My 240 gallon well stocked cichlid tank has a short stand and the sump that I obtained with my "free" tank is poorly designed and IMO too small for the job. I've been thinking of scrapping the current setup and doing a DIY sump with the livestock rubber troughs. From what I've read the...

    loc-line return lines?

anti-siphon hole I just put in loc line returns in my tank and am thinking this sounds like a good idea. Is it strongly advised to drill an anti-siphon hole or will a check valve in the return line suffice? What size hole is recommended and how far below the water line should it be?

New to the forums, filtration optimization

This is my tank, I have about 55-60 fish. My parameters are good. I have crushed coral substrate that does a great job of maintaining an alkaline pH. But The bioballs definitely have a lot of debris, what's the best way to filter the water before the bioballs? Right now I just have 2 layers of a...

New to the forums, filtration optimization

Problem is I can't fit a decent sized canister in my short stand :( so I think I'm stuck with the sump, it's not a hassle I just worry it's not big enough to do the job the most efficiently. Is there a rule about what volume of bio balls I should be using for a 240 gallon? The entire sump is...

New to the forums, filtration optimization

I had a 10 gallon FW tropical tank for years with danios and corys, and that was the extent of my experience until... a couple years ago I acquired a "free" 240 gallon tank. After researching my options I elected to go for African cichlids. They have been a TON of fun, and cichlid babies appear...
