I understand your point, but it is not that black or white. I want to keep it but I also don't want my fish to suffer if the sunlight is going to have negative effects on the tank.

I had to get rid of my nerites because they were laying eggs all over the place. They never hatched, but i hated the look. I do have a chinese algae eater.

Thanks for the tip. So I was able to solve the problem by raising my water level in the tank above where the intake connected to the hose going to the filter - there must have been some leakage there.

I ended up going with Estes black sand. It was pricey, but it was also very clean - I set aside most of a day to clean it but after ten minutes with a bucket and hose it was good to go.
