The stick on temperature things are not the most accurate. I would go buy a better thermometer to check to make sure that your stick on one is close to the proper temp.

Feed the flake to the bucket and see if you get any movement.

I would put some food in the bucket and watch for it... if the thing comes out and is waving in the air it is probably a brittle star... if it doesn't come out then I would watch it at night so I could get a better idea of what it is.

The reason for QT your fish for 2 months is to let the display have no fish in it. Most parasites can't survive without a host so if you QT your fish and treat them, then they are usually not infected after about 2 weeks, but your tank can remain infected for longer while the parasites search...
