Moving 90 gallon tank 4 miles away

I bought and moved a 65g/230l freshwater aquarium back at the beginning of May and used a large coleman cooler to hold about 1/3 of the water and the fish. So if you have a cooler, this is an option (and everyone uses one at some point, so it's a good investment!). For the drive, I used oxygen...

    My small tank

Clarifying To clarify by "boredom" I meant in reference to the fact that he is a shoaling/schooling fish and right now he's alone. I got him (and his previous tank-mates) second-hand, but the others succumbed to the stress of the move. In reference to the above, is the tank big enough for...

    My small tank

Hello, Now that I've gotten a large 230l/65g tank and have transferred my fish into it (they are doing great, see aquarium 004 | Flickr - Photo Sharing! for befores and afters), I've now set up my original tank as a planted tank and QT for a lone neon tetra that has a bent spine (I think it's...

    When fish "disappear"

I think I've figured out what's happening to my disappearing fish! Last night I had 6 healthy rummy-nosed tetras, this morning too, but after lunch, there were only 5! Where did the 6th go?! I looked through the java fern, through the other plants, in the grooves in the mangrove wood, in...

    Fertiliser Substrate under gravel substrate

Thanks for the advice. I'll look into European (I'm in Switzerland) equivalents. For now I've added a bit of coarse gravel all over and terraced it up on the left side (and removed and moved some mangrove). Once I find something better, I'll remove the gravel and replace. Darker gravel...

    Water parameters

So, since setting up my second-hand tank two months ago (saved all gravel and java fern plants and half the water), I have consistently had the same water parameter readings, but fish have been disappearing and/or getting ill left, right and centre. I'm figuring some of the fish were old, and...

    When fish "disappear"

Well, after a few days of not eating, the separated single Neon Tetra with bent spine is now eating and doing ok. So, if he lasts another few weeks, I'm going to guess it is NOT fish TB, but some sort of vitamin deficiency he got when with his other owner. Problem now (yes, ANOTHER problem...

    When fish "disappear"

Yeah.. I thought it might be TB but haven't had time to google the symptoms again... Better use gloves in both tanks from now on, I do not want to get an infection myself! Keeping my son's hands out the tank is another issue.

    When fish "disappear"

ACK! Another Neon tetra "disappeared". He was there for the evening feed and not there in the morning. Weird. So, I moved the two remaining Neon Tetras into the 40l tank as it was planted and cycled. One (who has had a huge belly the whole time I've had it) died overnight, the other...

    Fertiliser Substrate under gravel substrate

Hi, Is it possible to add plant substrate (not top gravel) to a tank after it's already set up? I added some to my small 40l tank which already had water, and the water was full of brown sediment for 2 weeks. Luckily it's just in the setting up phase, but I didn't want to remove the water...

    When fish "disappear"

I guess they are gone then and once the weather stabilises (still hot, cool, hot out this summer), it'll be time to think about fixing the numbers so they school better. That or I take the neons out and put them in my small 40l (12g?) tank... hmmm... -M

    When fish "disappear"

I only have the snails that came in with a new plant (despite rinsing!). No snails that I actually "bought". Could these attack a fish carcass? Another search today and still nothing to be found, but my weak male Swordtail is suffering again from the rapid temperature drop in the tank (we...

    When fish "disappear"

So my new second-hand 230/65g tank has been up and running since the end of May. I've lost one fish to stress (but she was a very large Platy so likely at the end of her lifespan anyway), which is pretty good considering I moved two aquariums and started with 5 swordtails (3 adults, 2 fry) in...

    summer heat!

I have swords and they also jump, so I cannot take my lid off complely either, but during our heat wave (it's been 36'C/100F during the day for 2 weeks), I have had to have the lights on less, and when they are on, I keep the lid open a crack so the heat from the lights have somewhere to go (not...

My very own 75g stocking / build thread!

Are you planning on getting all females or 2 females and one male? If the latter, they WILL breed and your stocking levels will change. If the former, make sure they are all about the same size. I have female swordtails and the larger one chases after the other (who shrank after having...

    Maintenance records

I have not gotten back into the habit of regular testing (hard with a toddler!), but I wish I could (I keep up with regular water changes, etc. But the testing is so time consuming and cannot safely be done with a kid around). That said, my tanks are still a lot of work, and I think it's...

I wanna beat up a platies fish

Well then your female was pregnant when you bought her as the gestation period is about 6 weeks! As for the male aggression -- the original thread subject -- make sure the water parameters are good as aggression can lead to stress and if the other two are stressed, they can get sick more...

    Snails!

Now that I have rehomed my clown loach, my 230l tank has a snail problem. These are the flat ones that I have (name?) and they must have come in with a new plant that I got about a month ago. I am going to try the usual lettuce/cucumber and snail traps, but anyone have other ideas? I don't...

    Stocking Ideas

As I got a second-hand tank that had one lonely rummy nosed tetra in it (amongst other fish), I've read up a lot about them. All my readings say that they do best in groups of 6 or more, so I'd add 3 more of them to your tank, provided it has space to do so. If you don't use the AQ advisor...

    Sick swordtails

Just wanted to say that once the swords that were unhealthy in the 40l were on the mend, I moved them one-by-one (fry first) from the 40l tank (where I think they were overcrowded) into the 230l tank. Since moving them, they've all recovered. A female platy that was being chased by my lone...

    Getting back into it

Just wanted to say I've managed to rehome the Common Pleco and the Clown Loach. The swords that were unhealthy in the 40l were on the mend, but the tank they were in didn't seem to help them, so after several weeks, I moved them one-by-one into the 230l tank. Since moving them, they've all...

    baby mollies shrinking and dying

If it's toxins leaching out from the clay bowl, you'll have to change to a different container... Don't know anything about Molly fry growth, I'm afraid. But shapes do change. You can also add vitamins to the water to aid growth.
