    Morning entertainment...

My maroon clown has taken to a shelf on my live rock, and has officially let me know that corals are not allowed there either. ‪DSCI0401.AVI‬‏ - YouTube Here's another attempt: ‪DSCI0403.AVI‬‏ - YouTube

Funny how easy it is to mess things up!!!

After doing a PWC on my 20g, I put the filter pad back in, and not paying attention, I learned real quickly that I did not get it as cleaned off as I thought. How did I learn this? I put the darn pad back in backwards, and when I turned my filter back on, the tank was immediatley filled with...

    starting a Fish-Only-Mangrove tank

My reef tank contains a small patch of about 7 mangroves, and all of my fish love to be in the roots of them a lot, so I was thinking of starting a Fish-Only-Mangrove tank. I know it's not a natural habitat for most fish sold out there, but the ones I have in my reef seem to enjoy them better...

    New Longnose Hawkfish

So, this will be the final fish addition to my reef, and I thought I'd show him off!! Also, does anyone know a good brand or alternative for an artificial nem? I recently lost my bta, and my maroons seem a little lost.

    Substrate ?

I was thinking of replacing, a little at a time, my crushed coral substrate, which I have been told from many sources harbors nitrates like a homeless shelter, with RO rinsed, silicate free playsand. If I did this, would I need to add a ph buffer to keep my ph up, or would the live rock be...

Adding a sump, got a question

I'm going to be, in the next week or so, adding a 10 gallon sump to my 30 gallon reef. I was wondering if it would be feasible to run my AC70 down there also, or should I just leave it up in the display tank? The reason for making the switch is many (ie get the equipment out of the display...

    Nitrate/Phosphate Question

Ok, all you experts out there, got a little question for you. I test my reef water 2X a week and consistantly get 80ppm for nitrates and .25ppm for phosphates. It is exactly the same week after week. I have tried reducing feedings, larger water changes, and I even put nitrate and phosphate...

    Brian's video blog thread...

I've decided to start a video blog thread to publish my tank videos from 20 gal FW community, 30 gal SW reef, and 10 gal SW? (don't quite know what I want to do with it yet.). I'm going to keep you all updated with pictures and videos from all 3 of my tanks. To start you all off, here is one...

    Unkillable

Well, I'm sure if I let my water parameters get off, my frogspawn would die, but as for outside sources, this thing is invinsible!! I came home from work one day last week to find my frogspawn so closed up, you could not even see any green, and thought for sure it had died. I tested the water...

    Legit concern or just paranoia?

I was checking the ingredients on my various foods looking for potential phosphate sources when I discovered that Aqueon (I know not the best of foods) flakes contained copper sulfate. Of course, I stopped using it, and tossed it, but I am wondering if this could've affected the long term...

    Crazy Cichlid display...

I went over to Bush Gardens, Tampa today and while I was there I saw the craziest african cichlid display. In the hippo pond was an esitmated 10000 african cichlids along with a hippo, several nile perch, some ducks, oh and a bunch of turtles...!!!!

Let me know if I'm going about this the right way...

I got home from work, and discovered my flame angel covered in ich and I am missing a chromis. I immediately filled a 10 gallon with tank water and moved an AC50 I had running on the DT to the 10 gallon. I moved the angel over, and will go to the lfs tommorrow morning for a treatment. All...

    Got lucky today!!

Went to a shop out of town and found an amazing white bubble-tip with pink tips on it, and had to have it. I wasn't really thinking of my clowns at the time, because they had a little section of the sandbed that they had claimed, and I figured that was that. Well, I was wrong. within 10...

    Algae bloom

Due to my own mistakes of running lights too long, I now have a crazy hair and cyano algae bloom. I am afraid if I go lights out to kill it, it will cause an ammonia spike from the decay. The problem is, it's on my live rock and not my glass, so I can't just clean it off.

    Interesting nano idea. Need opinions.

We absolutely love our 10 gallon nano, and want a display refugium with mangroves more for additional filtration than for food growth. So here is our idea, side by side 10 gallon reef and 5 gallon (or another 10 gallon) tanks. Since the plumbing for overflow and return would be a bit gawdy on...

    Moving tanks

I am planning on moving my current set up into a different tank, and was wondering if I changed the substrate, would that cause a mini-cycle? I plan on using the same filtration, decorations, and plants. I was thinking about just filling the free space in the filter with some of the old...

    Am I cuckoo?

Everyone I know always wants bigger and bigger tanks, but for some reason, I have absolutely fallen for the nano set-ups, and I want to set up a bunch of nano reefs instead of 1 or 2 large displays. Please help me make sense of this madness. My best resolution so far is it is my MTS trying to...

    Incense/Air Freshners

I haven't used them in a long time, but was wondering if incense or air fresheners will leach into aquarium systems through gas exchange. It's starting to get too warm to have the windows open, and I normally use them in the summertime into fall, but if there's even a chance (> 0.0000001%)...

    HOB Bubble baffle!!!

I figured out a pretty neat trick to eliminate the bubbles in my nano DT with an HOB filter, and thought I'd share it with you all, cause it's CHEAP!!!! I had bought a breeder box to keep macro algae in for additional filtration, and while cleaning my tank just before my PWC, I slid it down by...

I have an idea and need opinions first.

So, I want a bigger refugium on my 20 gal sw. I currently use a modded AC70, but just had a 5 gal tank become available to me. I was thinking of using an old AC50 for the overflow, and drilling out the bottom of the main compartment. Is this a feasible idea?

keeping bubbles out of the display tank a nessacity for health issues

I read a lot in the DIY section on sumps about including baffles for the bubbles, and started wondering, is keeping bubbles out of the display tank a nessacity for health issues or is it just an aesthetic issue? The reason I ask is because I use a HOB filter (modded AC70), and have quite a few...

    Way COOL!!!!

Upon completeing my PWC of my 30 gal community, I noticed my bloodfin tetras going absolutly nuts. After observing them for a few minutes I realized, that the fresh water must have triggered them for spawning. It appears I have 3 females, and they have been leaping and dumping eggs left and...
