Bringing my tank back to "normalcy"

Did some major house cleaning. Those java ferns were EVERYWHERE. Their roots were attached to everything. Might end up taking my wood out which the ferns are attached to and start from close to scratch but we'll see.

Bringing my tank back to "normalcy"

Thanks guys. I really like the idea of staggering my lighting. Already changed my schedule from on 8-11, off 11-2, and on 2-7. Also have a quick question about water changes and my fluval. Should I turn it off during the water change? I typically take 30% or so water out, so wondering if I...

Bringing my tank back to "normalcy"

So it's been a while since I've posted here, probably a few years... anyway, had some kids and stuff since then which left my tank under less care than previously. I basically just did weekly water changes with not much else. I'm finally getting back to the grind however, bought a new filter...

We all know how to play this game: Name this Algae!

Thanks again alkane, I think this gives me the push to buy new bulbs that I've been meaning to do. aqua_chem, I do not regularly check nitrates, I dose weekly with KNO3 through. I should probably check my water given all this...

We all know how to play this game: Name this Algae!

To be honest, I'm not sure what my parameters are, I've pretty much kept the same schedule of water changes and dosing for the past year with no problems until now, kind of got slack with it I guess since everything seemed ok... (20% weekly changes, cap full of flourish comprehensive, 1/4...

We all know how to play this game: Name this Algae!

Hello all, So recently my tank is beginning to become victim to this nasty slime algae, I don't know what it is, where it came from, or how to get rid of it :( I think it originated on my log and started to spread. I vacuum it up pretty much once a week but it comes back only a few days...

    14 gallon nano reef starup

Just placed my order! Got the 29 gallon for $280. I realize that the light included with it limits the corals I can keep, are there any specific that would work? Just look for lower to medium light corals? Also, I'm thinking of using some Purigen in the filter. Since I may go without the...

    14 gallon nano reef starup

Thanks for replying! That's a cheap RO/DI unit, wow, most of the ones I was looking at were $150 and more and less GPD. I think I'll take your advice and skip on the skimmer, though I was planning on getting a decent refractometer anyway, it will still leave money that could be better spent...

    14 gallon nano reef starup

Hey all, so I'm making the transition to saltwater and want to start with a nano. I know they say start larger, but I lack space and I really love nano aquariums. So first off I'd just like to share what my thoughts were and also ask a few questions! So far I have this as my "stock" list: Tank...

    Opinions on new fish

Thanks guys. I was thinking more barbs as well as I remember reading they are better with other ones around. Didn't realize the red tails got that big! Currently I have just 1 cory. I would like to get more algae eaters, someone in my tank ate one of my snails so all I have is one snail. I know...

    Opinions on new fish

So I'm thinking of adding 2 or 3 new fish to my 29 gallon planted soon, currently I have a tiger barb, 2 mollies, cory catfish, 2 glofish, a mystery snail, a red tail shark, an albino frog, and 3 black phantom tetras. I really like fish that stay in "schools" like the glofish and tetras. I know...

    White spots, Ich or fungus?

Bought some Pimafix, Metafix, and Ick Guard, all the spots on my tiger disappeared overnight! Over course I'm going to finish the treatment, but so far everything looks good so I'm happy.

Post your full tank shot here.

My 29g planted tank. my anachris in the back right has recently started falling apart due to excel and I had to take out some other plants due to them dying from a blackout. I'm eventually going to take out that fake coral and replace it with another piece of driftwood.

    White spots, Ich or fungus?

Thanks guys, I'll give those a shot. Should I put carbon back in my filter afterwards to remove the meds? Currently I'm not running carbon.

    White spots, Ich or fungus?

So my tiger barb recently developed white spots on his fins and around his eyes (see pic). I can't tell what it is and if it is Ich, what's the best way to treat it in a planted tank where raising the temp much about 80 isn't really possible. Thanks!

    Another algae question....

Sorry for yet another algae question, but this one is not one I found while searching, though I partially found the answer! So I have a fairly heavily planted tank which recently had an outbreak of green algae, after reading and testing, I found out both my phosphate and nitrate levels were way...

    Ditching carbon and replacing with...?

Thanks guys. My HOB uses the pre-fabricated carbon packet. I like the idea of cutting it open and emptying the carbon out. I might try some floss and ceramic tiles in there.

    Ditching carbon and replacing with...?

So after a lot of reading on the forum I think I'm gonna ditch the carbon in my Tetra EX45 HOB filter. In retrospect I probably would've gotten a canister filter for my tank (planted fairly well), but such is life. My question is, what should I replace the carbon with? I've seen mention of floss...

    Betta overly stressed?

I picked up a small filter and heater for the tank, he's finally starting to move around again today and eat as well, so hopefully all is well again. Thanks! I still wonder why he was fine for 2 years w/o a heater or filter though.

    Betta overly stressed?

New tank is the same size, no heater, but we never used a heater with the old tank and he's been fine in there for over 2 years now. Tank is in the same spot and stays at about 72 probably. Never cycled the tank, didn't think it was necessary in a tank that small with only 1 fish, we change the...

    Betta overly stressed?

So we have a Betta who was doing fine and dandy in his 2.5 gallon aquarium until the dog decided to run across the floor at 1000 mph for no reason and slide right into the stand the fish was on and knock it all over the floor. The bowl shattered obviously but we recovered the fish immediately...

    Dying plants :(

Thanks a million again. Tossed all the non-aquatic plants, redid the tank the "right" way and added some root tabs, I'm going out of town tomorrow for Christmas so hopefully I'll come home to a lush green tank!

    Dying plants :(

Thanks so much! I think you hit the nail on the head with #3, it's funny the only two plants that are thriving in my tank are the two that I didn't buy in one of those Petco tubes. The first picture here is a plant that I bought from "in the water" that seems not to be doing well (I just pruned...
