Green Water - what do I test for first?

20 days later.... Okay, so we're 20 days later and the green has mostly cleared up but there's just a touch of cloudiness left. Should I remove the willow and put some carbon in my filter for a day or two or is there something else I should do to fully restore clarity?

Green Water - what do I test for first?

It will restore balance to the Force! Awesome! I just stuck two branches in there. The fishies were very curious!:fish2:

Green Water - what do I test for first?

I just so happen to have a willow in my back yard! I'll give it a try. So what about willow makes it clear up the algae?

Green Water - what do I test for first?

Before I put it on the timer I would turn it on when I got up and then turn it off when I went to bed, so that was generally more then 12 hours. When I put it on the timer, I figured 12 would be a good approximation. Other than that I have no good reason for running the lights for 12 hours...

Green Water - what do I test for first?

I have a lovely case of green water. I have a 30 G med lo-tech planted tank with LED lights. I have java fern and chain sword, both of which are growing well. My lights are on for about 12 hours a day. I just put them on a timer, and 12 hours is actually shorter a photo period than I before...

Thoughts on schools at various levels?

I've decided on silver tip tetras... they're so pretty - and they're small so they shouldn't be nippy! Thanks for your help! It was a great discussion!

    PH and hardness of water?

What kind of water conditioner are you thinking of - a fancy 'water conditioning system' would affect your hardness and pH. Water conditioner liquid that you add to your tap water to neutralize the chlorine will not change the hardness or pH of your water. In a water softening system, an...

Thoughts on schools at various levels?

I'm confused now ..... a school of tetras would be fine in the same region but a school of a different species would not?

Thoughts on schools at various levels?

So, giving up the tetra mindset for a moment, what else would be appropriate for a mid-level school to go with my White Skirts?

Are the Von Rios and Lemons on the peaceful list or the pain in the tuckus list? :)

Thoughts on schools at various levels?

I already have the white skirts. I was going to add black skirts to round out the school. Mine are really sedate and just hang out all relaxed and groovy. I must have gotten lucky. So what would y'all recommend as more peaceful tetras?

Or the VonRio Tetra or Lemon Tetra....they're cool too!

Thoughts on schools at various levels?

Tetras - white/black fin and then another more colorful kind - like a serpae, congo, or bleeding heart. Would that work?

Thoughts on schools at various levels?

I have a 30 long, so I was thinking of doing 2 in the middle range, one on the top and one on the bottom and no centerpiece fish....

Thoughts on schools at various levels?

When stocking a community tank, is it acceptable to put more than one type of school at the various levels (top, mid, bottom) or should one strive for a single school at each level and then some centerpiece fish?

    30 Gal Stocking dilemma....

Will the bleeding heart tetras school with my white skirts or are they too different?

    30 Gal Stocking dilemma....

I don't know what to get next. :fish2: In my cycled 30 gal I have 5 white skirt tetras, 1 zebra danio and 1 panda cory. Both the danio and the cory had friends, but a bad batch of danios and water that was too hard for the corys took them out. In my QT tank I have 6 pearl danios ready to add...

Carbon filter media in planted tank?

As I proceed further into having a planted tank, I read somewhere that one should not use activated carbon media with a planted tank. The reasoning was that it filters out some of the nutrients the plants would use. What is the general consensus and experience regarding this? Thanks!

White Fin Tetra swimming funny and panting....

So one of my white fin Tetras started swimming funny this morning and is now panting and lying on the bottom of the tank. At first it looked like a swim bladder problem. I have fed pees but I'm not sure he's able to get to them before the other fish gobble them down. This fish has always had...

    Do Swordtails need schools?

Summing up the combined experience above - keep a male with at least 2 females, a female by itself seems to be fine, males by themselves are still frisky buggers and will try to mate with passing fish, and just males is a bad idea.... did I get that right? If I got a single female, how would...

    Do Swordtails need schools?

Do Swordtails need schools or others of their kind or are they happy as singlets? My daughter fell in love with a black and blue swordtail at our LFS. I told her I'd research it and see if it would fit into the plan. It's quite pretty but it would need to be a specimen fish rather than a...

Realistic death rate with new fish???

The reason I've been looking at RO water is that I keep freshwater fish, and my tap is insanely hard. I picked up the brochure from the water vending machine when I was at the store yesterday - it's a 4 stage filter - sediment filter, activated carbon filter, a reverse osmosis filter that says...
