As I proceed further into having a planted tank, I read somewhere that one should not use activated carbon media with a planted tank. The reasoning was that it filters out some of the nutrients the plants would use. What is the general consensus and experience regarding this?

Thanks!

Carbon shouldn't be needed and shouldn't be used in a planted tank except to remove meds after treatment. Some trace elements are filtered by carbon that are beneficial to plants.

It isn't going to be a big deal. But you really shouldn't be using carbon unless you're clearing up medicines or you've just set up a tank and are trying to clear your water. Carbon gets clogged up in a week at which point is useless. Your water should be nice and crystal clear even without the use of carbon.
