    african dwarf frogs commiting suicide???

seriously!!!! I have a 20 gal set up and I just got a new filter (aquaclear 20-50) that has been running for a couple of weeks now. last night my husband and I had to dig one of our dwarf frogs out of the intake valve. his legs had got sucked up and the rest of his body was hanging out. poor guy...

Major Problem with my new 125 gallon tank

one more thing....you said that when you were doing your twice daily water changes that you were also vaccuuming the gravel. I wouldn't do that right now until you actually have a lot of debris in there. you will cause your tank to do a mini cycle everytime you take out the bacteria that is...

    first aqua clear!!!....question

so recently switched my fish from a 55 gal to a 20 with great success! been watching the water VERY CAREFULLY because i think there might be a scoche too much bio load in there. I had a topfin power filter 60 and didn't realize just how freakin loud that thing was until we put it on the 20 gal...

    Help with sand

you just hold the vaccuum over the sand, start at about an inch above and creep closer....if you start lifting sand, you're too close. sand is very easy to take care of. you will love it!

    ammonia NEVER goes below .25

i am planning on putting them all in the 20 gal. i am taking down the 55 gal for a while so seperating them isn't an option. i change the water every two weeks but will be doing water changes every week when they switch to the 20 gal and i will be keeping a very very close eye on the parameters...

    ammonia NEVER goes below .25

okay ph is between 6.6 and 7 (i'm terrible at trying to figure out the color chart) i would say a bit closer to 6.6 though because it was more green than the water i checked from the tap. straight from the tap the ph was 7.6 i'm such a terrible fish mommy. i just assumed that my ph would stay...

    ammonia NEVER goes below .25

you know, the filter might be the issue. i have a topfin power 60. hmmmm, and i've been playing around with the idea of getting a new one. i think thats exactly what i should do now. I will definitely take some water to the lfs aswell. thank you! do you think it would be okay to move to the 20...

    ammonia NEVER goes below .25

okay, i know that ideally my tank should always be at 0 ppm for ammonia. However, I have had my tank running for a year now and i do frequent water changes, plus vaccuuming (i used to have gravel, now i have sand) and my ammonia has always stayed at a consistent .25 ppm. my fish are healthy, and...

    PetSmart filters? what's your opinion

you need to look for a local fish store, i.e. LFS. depending on where you live you might have to drive to find a good one. just google it and see what you can come up with. best thing to do when you find one, or a few, is spend time in them looking around, on a few occasions, so you can get a...

    PetSmart filters? what's your opinion

hahahahaha i would of raised a stink about it but I live out in the middle of nowheres ville and didn't want to drag my kiddos back into town. I did call them, however, and told them they should check their tanks. i'm SOOOO sure they jumped all over that lol

    PetSmart filters? what's your opinion

you can take your pleco to an LFS. they like that kind of stuff. too bad you can't keep him because they are really cool. if you have a small tank, look at getting a bristle nose or a rubber lip pleco. i love my rubber lip because he looks so prehistoric

    Favourite fish to watch?

my betta used to be hilarious. my mother bought me a hideous leopard print snuggie that i love to wear hahahaha and he would flare up at it and try to lunge at it. sadly, he developed a nasty tumor and is now in the big fish tank in the sky. I also love my african dwark frogs. they are such...

    PetSmart filters? what's your opinion

ugh, i will NEVER buy a fish from petsmart EVER again. the last time I did, 3 of them died within 2-3 days and then a couple of the fish i already had died. VERY irritating

    Driftwood and Ph Questions...

tannins leaching from driftwood lower your ph...soooo, boiling the driftwood and getting the tannins out will inturn, not lower the ph of your tank. if you clean your driftwood, and i mean CLEAN your driftwood so you don't introduce yucky bacteria into your tank, you can just put it straight in...

    question about water changes

bacteria live in the filter media and the substrate, so if you are trying to get your ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates and such down, just sucking the water out every day will be fine. cleaning the gravel too much will rid your tank of all the good bacteria you want to keep

    New Guy Needing Help

that is an awesome question...i would also like to know the answer to that! (sorry i can't provide you with an answer). If its possible to do so, I would test your friends water first to make sure its "good" water and check how healthy his fish are. it would be awful to transfer water to a new...

    ammonia problem

I have tried ammonia remover before and it never actually worked. I was then told that ammonia remover is really just a chemical that doesn't need to be added to your tank. I threw mine away and I just do frequent water changes. IMO when you have something spike like that I just assume 1 water...

    PetSmart filters? what's your opinion

huh, good point bigjim. I'm relatively new to the aquarium world. i've only had my tank running for a year. i'm setting up a 20 gal so I will be looking at other filtration options. I will keep that in mind. I decided last night that I'm going to add a sponge filter, possibly as a prefilter.
