Most love plant life my favorite are either the jack Dempsey they recognize your face and beg at feeding time I suggest a pair of them

They are great fish but aggressive I had one for a brackish tank but he was eating my columbian catfish tails it was getting annoying so I brought him hack to the pet store sad haha

Yes at your local pet store there will be substrate specifically for cichlids I have it for my oscars they like it and do not eat it like gravel
