    White rock turned black

Thanks, I do have a lot of green algae, but I have been told that 8-10 hours of lights is the norm. What are vals?

    White rock turned black

I have had my tank up and running for about 3 months now, and I bought CaribSea white substrate for my tank (about 125 lbs). I have about 20 peacock cichlids and a couple of syndodontis (one of which has been in my tank about a week). After less than a month my substrate started turning black...

    Strange readings in new tank

I think my wife might actually reach for .40 if I were to do that :2gunfire: . My brother just bought a new 55 (NASCARPaul) so maybe I'll just give them to him.

    Strange readings in new tank

Cool, thanks again, ferret, I appreciate your help as always. I am wanting to get my peacock cichlids now but first I am going to add a little more crushed coral to fill in a couple of low spots, rearrange my holey rocks and also rearrange some of my plants. I have a new Emperor 400 that...

    self made hood

I just built a canopy...well, am building a canopy. I usually draw all my woodworking projects up in Visio but this time I kinda winged it. I will see if I can draw up the plans this weekend and psot them, along with pictures of the canopy.

    Strange readings in new tank

I did as suggested, and measured just about everything I could from both the tap and the tank. I have measurable nitrates from the tap, but they are in the <1.0 ppm range, but the reading from the tank was around 10ppm. My pH is around 8.8 as best I can tell, and my ammonia and nitrites were 0...

    Strange readings in new tank

Howdy folks, I finally got up and running and now I have - you got it - another question :?: . I put 8 Danios and 5 Tiger Barbs in my tank to get the process started, and I immediately started testing (actually even before I put the fish in) to keep track of the ammonia, nitrite and nitrate...

    Lighting quantity question

Thank you all for the replies. Do you think 110 watts is enough? 220?

    Lighting - how much?

Thanks, ferret. The tank is 72-1/2" long and has a wide glass plate in the middle, but other than that it is one long section. I would like to get two 36" lights or three 22" lights but I don't want to blind the fish (or my wife)!

    Lighting - how much?

I just posted this in DIY but wanted to get some responses to this here as this is my first aquarium. In a nutshell, I plan to have Peacock Cichlids in my 135g tank with a few (10-15) live plants. How much lighting should I buy? I want to order from AHSupply but I don't want to get too much...

    Lighting quantity question

Well, I am almost finished with my home-made canopy (I forgot to take pictures this weekend but I will have some up soon, and will make the plans available to anyone who wants them), and I am ready to purchase the lights for them. The canopy is a 72-5/8" long (inside dimensions) to allow the...

    Finally Up and Running

Thanks, tkos. Any thoughts about what size (physical) of lights? PC or regular fluorescent? I've just about exhausted my entire knowledge base of lighting for aquariums. I don't know diddly squat about how to start, though I have looked at AHSupply.com.

    Finally Up and Running

Also, what suggestions can y'all make for lighting for the canopy I am building? It will be a plywood/wood affair, about 74" long by 20" deep by 10" tall and will overlap the tank's upper rim. If possible I would like to have a FEW live plants (I have anacris now).

    Finally Up and Running

:D Well, after my usual analysis paralysis I finally got the stand [mostly] done and used the old light "canopy" I bought from the guy who sold me the tank. I filled it with 135 lbs. of CaribSea crushed coral, several Holey Rocks, five bunches of anacris (sp?), and three fake plants for...

    latest overflow

 Would someone mind explaining to this newbie what the overflow is and what it's for? I have HOB filters but I am thinking of going to a sump system before I start the tank, but I don't understand how it works (even after reading as much as I could on the subject).

    garf.org stand questions

One secret I have used to true up my miter cuts is to take the two pieces that are going to be mitered and recut the joint after you have cut the 45's. That way you split the difference and the joint trues right up.

Used 125 Gallon... I'm DIY'ing Stand, Hood, and Sump!

Great job! The stand looks great Thaiboxer! Looks like we're paralleling efforts to build a new stand. I overdid the skeleton as well, I used 4x4 posts with a lot of 2x4 bracing, but I don't think it is going to fail (knock on wood). Keep the pictures coming on the finished product!

    How to start my tank

Pictures of stand are up I uploaded a few pictures of the stand I have nearly completed - they are in my Member Gallery. It is pretty stout, I hope it will hold all the weight! I skinned it with beaded-pine wainscotting to match the walls in my great room. Need to stain it and add some doors...
