    10gal update [pics]

Hey all, my 10gal has undergone quite a bit of change over the past few weeks: Here's the tank soon after the original: I was using DIY CO2 with a poorly designed reactor. It was pretty efficient, but way too much work and made too much noise. A few weeks ago: The lilaeopsis in the front...

    DPs and Cherry Shrimp

....a match made in heaven or trouble in paradise? I've read a lot about keeping Dwarf Puffers with Amano Shrimp with success, but those are a bit bigger than Cherry Shrimp. The Cherry Shrimp will definitely be purchased this week and I don't -absolutely- have to get DPs, but I would...

    What the.... (ID needed)

This is definitely a first for me. I was going to remove some of the bushy algae from my java fern when I noticed this little bugger hanging onto the algae! What is it and does it pose any threat to the tank? tia

    Algae IDs, please

I'm pretty certain of what each is, but some verification would be nice. Name, cause, and whether or not amano shrimp or oto would eat it would be great. There isn't very much of it in the tank, a few here and there, but I suspect this is normal because my params are in check.

    Dwarf Fuffer with False Siamensis

Hey all, tomorrow afternoon I'll be placing a plant order with AZ Gardens and since they have to ship overnight, I wanted to add a few animals. Their site says the dwarf puffers are raised in the same tank as the shrimp, which is good because there will be amano shrimp in the tank eventually...

    Lilaeopsis failed; next...

Even though other plants are doing great, nutrients and parameters are in check, lighting is at 6.2wpg (10gal tank), and CO2 is being injected, the lilaeopsis novea-zealandiae isn't doing too well. Failed, IMO. Only a few plantlets have produced runners, but the rest seems to be declining...

    Rotala node spacing

My rotala indica seems to have a lot of space in between leaf nodes. On average, it's a space of .75". When the original bunch was planted, the spacing was much closer, around .25". I was thinking the plant might be growing too fast, since my lighting is now around 6.2wpg (1x36 and 2x13 over...

    my temporary co2 setup

i hooked up a temporary diy co2 system for the 10gal yesterday. it's a yeast/sugar generator with a diy reactor like the mini vortex (except it only cost $8 instead of $50.) the reactor is comprised of a rio 50 water pump and a "reactor chamber." actually, it's just a wardly pH down bottle i...

    10gal Finally set up! *pics*

Today was offically the last day of class for the summer quarter at the university of cincinnati, so i did what any exhausted, broke college student/aquarium geek would do....spend money!! and spend i did :) there is a new aquarium adventure store that opened up three weeks ago and i had heard...

    Fish ID

just picked this little guy/girl up today to clean up some red algae on my java fern and anubias. i wanted a true SAE, and the store had it labeled as a "true siamese algae eater". great. or so i thought... upon closer inspection, i started telling the owner of the shop (cousin's husband)...

    Aquarium Adventure

hey, this is for those of you who live in cleveland, columbus, and long island... a new aquarium adventure store just opened up in the north eastern part of cincininati. i haven't been there yet, but my cousin (who owns the lfs i alwasy go to) snuck in before they opened (he acted like a...

    Quick algae ID

I'm pretty sure this is red algae (bba) but i'd like a second opinion. this is in the ten gallon i just set up about three or four weeks ago, so ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates all read zero. lighting is 2.6wpg. only plants in there right now are the anubias nana and java fern i rescued from...

    Question about felt...

Is felt safe to use in the aquarium? i was thinking about using black felt as a background for the inside of my 10gal and attaching java moss to. that way it would provide somewhat of an unlimited scafolding for the moss to grow along. i was also thinking i could silicone some thin magnetic...

    A small update

for those of you that were interested, i filled the DIY 85gal today. works great and looks even better. i also hooked up the xp3 filter to circulate the water for the week that the tank is leak testing. i don't foresee any problems because the epoxy and silicone are very solid. i have the...

    Prob with my lights

i set up a 10gal this past saturday as a heavily planted dwarf puffer species tank. the lighting was upgraded to the AHS 2x13, but after the lights are on for a while (a couple hourse), the right light goes out. the left light has never gone out. is this a heat problem? the canopy feels...

    Coralife Turbo-Twist Question

i'm about a month away from having my big DIY project finished, maybe. as of right now, my filtration consists of one XP3. i'd like to add a magnum HOT or magnum 350 as a second full time filter/water polisher/backup. my DIY CO2 reactor will be plumbed in-line with the return of my XP3. i'd...

    Plant ID

What is the red plant in this picture? My first guess was ludwigia arcuata... I'm going for a similar "swamp" look in my upcoming tank using a lot of bolbitis, narrow leaf java fern, moss, anubias, crypt. balansae, echinidorus tenellus, etc... that rust red is a great accent!

    Wasp Pictures (Round 2)

No dial up warning. It was a bit cooler today so the nest activity was way down from usual. It was very difficult staining the front panels of my new stand while this entire group was buzzing around the garage. I decided to take some pictures now because my dad is going to destroy...

Can Echinodorus tenellus be trimmed to height or do the longest leaves simply need to be pulled? tia

Finally got a digital camera, first pic!

no warning on this, i have no mercy for dial up users ;) i finally got a canon a60 and this is the first picture i took, my 13" common pleco! i should apologize for the tank being a mess right now b/c i've been busy building the 85gal. i'm still learning, obviously, so hopefully i'll get...

    lighting for a nano....

hey all, i'm a newbie to you salties! most of the time i hang around the freshwater planted tank forum, but i think i'd like to set up a 10 gallon nano reef. i understand most of what's going on except for the lighting. i'd like to keep coral, though i'm not sure exactly what kind just...

    10gal species tank...

hey folks, i finally got to see some dwarf puffers in person today and i can see why everybody loves them. i was thinking about setting up a ten gallon species tank for them, but from the info i've gathered so far, i can't tell if a species tank would be a good idea. can a group of a half...

    Cichlids for a planted tank?

hey, i don't know a whole lot about cichlids, but i'm planning on getting a few apistogramma double reds. are there any other cichlids that max out in the 4-5" range and are suitable for an 85gal planted tank? also, i don't care much for discus...too big and too pricey for me.
