    Asking Santa for RO/DI

Well, it's been awhile since I've posted, sorry to have been away so long. Anyway, my house is on a well, and though that water has served well (no pun intended ;-), the cyno in my 55 that I am fighting is really getting to me, despite the water changes and increased flow. Of course, the 125...

stuff turns up 7 months later?

well, uh, the rock? seriously, I have the same thing. My LR is just over a years old, and I'm STILL finding stuff that must have been seeded /dormant /whatever. If you've change the fish (or one has died), then whatever it was eating now has a chance. I keep finding new tube worms since...

    Coralline lighting question

I must admit that I'm not entirely sure what "normal output" means -- but if that is the same as the basic strip lights typically used on fresh water tanks, I would then say (IME) that they are not enough. I had them when I got my first batch of LR from liverocks.com. It took about 5-6 months...

    Ground probes

I don't have one yet, but will soon. Just a few weeks ago, the heater in my QT broke (cracked) -- don't know how, but it did whether my own fault or not. Imagine my surprize when (without seeing the broken heater), I reach in and ZAP! not a good feeling. Until then, I was of the opinion "why...

planning for an ASM G4 skimmer - question

thanks for the sanity check. I haven't purchased it yet, but I certainly look into captivereefs -- I got my light there. Thanks Matt

planning for an ASM G4 skimmer - question

Hey Everyone -- Does anyone know where I can find the depth requirement for this skimmer? I'm planning for an upgrade :-) Thanks. Matt

How best to replace cc with sand?

Hey everyone -- I've got a 55 gal tank with cc that's been established for over a year, and the cc substrate is finally hitting my limits. The basic problem is that I've got [dare I say] too much live rock -- about 110 pounds in a 55 gal -- great filtration, but makes it really tough to clean...

    More problems since the move.....

Did the upgrade involve new/different/stronger lighting? If there's any big change to the lighting, many corals need some acclimation. Just a thought. Matt

    Euroreef vs. ASM G-Series: difference?

Hey everyone -- As I understand it, the ASM skimmer is very much like the Euroreef in design and features, but is made more economically (I hope this is different than "cheaper"). Anyone have insight into these two brands, and whether the Euroreef is worth the price difference. Thanks. Matt

What sort of worm is this?

hitchhiker on the LR.com order :-)

What sort of worm is this?

Well, I was sitting and watching the tank tonight, and noticed this little bugger crawling around in the open. Last time I saw him, he was less than an inch -- now almost three! Anyway, I'm not entirely sure what this is. I've heard conflicting opinions on other forums about bristle worms (or...

    Kole Yellow Eye Tang

I've got one of 'em -- great little guy. Good eater, and picks at the algea on the glass and LR all the time. Just make sure your 'scaping has a few places for him to hide and take cover. GL. Matt

    playsand specifics, please

Very cool -- many thanks for the quick answer! Kudos on the way :-) Matt

    playsand specifics, please

Hey Everyone -- I've got cc in my 55 gal, and I can't seem to get the nitrates below 20-ish for very long, which I suspect is what did in my cleaner shrimp (and the corals could be looking a bit better, too). Anyway, I've read many posts here about playsand, and need to clarify a few things...

    Bulkhead in Rubbermaid Sump

Interesting Phyl -- could you post a picture of that set up? I'd like to add a sump to my 55 gal, and am looking to inexpensive alternatives. Thanks. Matt

OH MAN! IS MY ROCK DEAD?

Wow -- does THIS sound familar! I was in your EXACT same position in December -- had my rock for less than a year under flourescents, and noticed a drastic drop in the coraline after looking at some photos from when I first got it. Anyway, I got the exact same lights in December, and it has...

molting and the need for iodine??

Well, this actually makes me feel better. when we got him about a year ago, he was already his body was about 1-1.5" long. In the year we've had him, he had grown quite nicely to over 2". Thanks. Matt

molting and the need for iodine??

Hey Everyone -- The cleaner shrimp the we've had for a year has suddenly died. Now, leading up to this unfortunate event, I will admit that the nitrate was a bit high for a couple of weeks (20-40-ish). Things were busy, and I was admittedly procrastinating, reasoning that although it's best...

    getting ready for a sump

Thanks -- Not doubting you, but why's that? performance? maintenance? Sounds like sage advice -- thanks. When you say "dual", does that mean there are two hoses from the o/f to the sump? if so, is that just for peace of mind? Unless there are two J tubes, it would still seem to have a...

    getting ready for a sump

Hey Everyone -- I've got a 55 gal that's been running quite happily for a year, and all has been going well with the LR, Fluval canister, and Seaclone skimmer. But I've finally gotten sick and tired of looking at and manually skimming the surface crud, so I'm finally getting around to putting...

    closed loop question

Very cool -- thanks. I'm just about to the point where I'm ready to upgrade from my 55 to a 120. This is something I'll definitely work in. Thanks again. Matt

    uh??? phosphate problem help?!?!?!?!

Do you have a refugium? That would help the most. But if you don't (nor do I -- yet ;-) then the least obtrusive way (ie, without adding chemicals) is to do a water change. Not knowing your setup, it's tough to say for sure, but I find that a good scrubbing of my cc substrate will do wonders...

    closed loop question

Hey Everyone -- I've recently stumbled upon quite a few mentions of a "closed loop" setup on this and other forums. What exactly is that? Best as I can tell, it looks like nothing more than a pump (say, in your stand) that sucks water from near the bottom of the tank, and squirts it back in...

which to use for calcium dosing?

Steve-s and PC -- many thanks for the sanity check. I do use the reef carbonate as well, and like you say, PC, why mess with success? Jonathan -- sorry, never heard of aragamilk, but see that (gotta love Google) that it does pretty much the same thing, right? Matt
