My water checks are looking pretty good. NH4 - 0.02 NO2 - 0.005 NO3 - 5 Is it necessary to change the water weekly if the water ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates are within acceptable ranges?

Yesterday the snail door was open more than usual but it didn't react to any nudging at all. I was pretty certain it was dead. Today its gone, no idead where, so maybe its still alive :)

I have been using the gravel vac but there are several shops recommending I don't need to. I would say that 60% of the gravel doesn't get touched anyway because of the plants, and I want to add more. If the fish waste breaks down, why do we need to vac it anyway?

Yeah, I've been told by a few LFS not to use the gravel vac anymore because its food for the plants, plus it upsets the bacteria.

Does this harvest bacteria just like gravel does? I take it the fish waste just breaks down as normal in the Eco as it does with gravel?
