My tank has been taken over

Well, I finally broke down and actually built a co2 diffuser to put inline on the xp1 I am running on the 29 gal tank. not only did I have to cut back on the amount of diy co2 i was using, my plants are now growing out of control. I went from trimming them back once ever week or two, to...

    Cannister filter and planted tanks...

I have the xp1 on my 29 gal planted, use the spray bar here also. never had the problem of the fish gasping at the surface of the water. but then again my plants pearl every day, the only problem i am having is the plants grow too fast now.

    trimming Vals

Personally, I either trim the plants and throw the trimmed parts away, or with the ones that I can replant i cut them off and replant them. of course my tank has been taken over by plants now, so I am in the process of just throwing plants away.

    diatom filter

there are diatom filters on the market that are actually made just for that purpose, or you can use a hot magnum with the micron filter cartridge and seed that with de powder also.

    Swords

True, most swords can and will take over most tanks. I know that the compacta sword i have in my 29 now is growing so well i have to keep it trimmed back so that the rest of the plants can grow. am also fixing to have to cut off the 5 plantlets that are growing, since they all now have some...

    Question about Vacuuming Gravel!

man if that is your tank, I wouldnt ever remove the plants. with that many plants i dont understand how your nitrates are staying high, unless you are massively overfeeding, or adding too much nitrate with fertz. i know with my tank, after i tested it last night, i actually had to add...

    Feeding a community...

I was about to ask that greenfish. sounds like you really need to test your kh and perhaps adjust it. this will help stabilize your ph. i try to keep my ph at 6.6 with a kh of 3.5, or roughly 60ppm. this usually gives me around 30ppm of co2, and the ph hasnt moved since i started adding co2.

    Diffusing CO2 thru Cannister

right now i am using a hot magnum as a diffuser, but am thinking of setting something up on my filstar. just not sure if i should or not, as i already have a uv sterilizer inline on it. was actually thinking more of the gravel vac tube method to do this.

What additional test kits do I need?

Iron is a good kit to have on a planted i have noticed, especially if you are heavily planted. just wanted to put in my two cents worth

Upgrading to plants - Adding the correct substrate??

Mine is between 5 to 6 inches thick through out most of my tank. Many on here have told me that it is too deep, and doesnt look good. But personally I like how it looks, and have had no problems with any anerobic bacteria, plants are growing fine, have a mass of roots that you can see in the...

Using Crushed Coral to Stabilize Ph

I like the AP tests and the hagen test kits also.

Using Crushed Coral to Stabilize Ph

I would have to agree with everyone else on this one, get a decent Kh test kit and test for that. A very low KH could very well be the reason your ph is dropping. The baking soda route might be the easiest and most cost effective treatment for it if that is the problem.

    Photoperiod question

I leave mine on for 14 hours a day. Get great growth at that long, I wouldnt go any longer than that though.

    Planted 29 gal tank

Thanks, added three new plants today, two vals and a chain sword. Got em from a friend of mine who ordered too much from online, so passed em on to me. so its getting filled out, now just to get it to grow wild so I can start trimming away lol. had a little pearling today out of the crispus...

    Planted 29 gal tank

Yeah I know thats alota light on that tank, but figured if I was getting rid of the tanks, I could keep what I want on it. Just put that light on there, along with a rena filstar xp1 in addition to the hot magnum that I use as a diffuser. seems like a lot of water movement but i have the xp1...

    Planted 29 gal tank

Well, I got rid of all of my tanks earlier this week and late last week except for the 29 gal planted I was working on. Bought a digital camera with the money and of course christmas for my daughter. Decided I would try to put a pic of the tank on here, even if it is still in the early stages...

    DIY CO2 not producing.

Dont know if this will help you or not, but i know on my setup I have two 1.89L bottles run into a 20 oz bottle half full of water, from which I run the tubing into the intake of a hot magnum to act as the diffuser. as far as the mixture goes, I use 1.25cups of sugar, 1t of baking soda, and...

Upgrading to plants - Adding the correct substrate??

Yes people put eco complete or other plant susbtrates under layers of sand, pool filter sand being the most common. some such as I just have the sand as a substrate and use root tabs or regular fertilizer instead of a plant substrate. I use just sand, and have no problems growing plants, I...

    Canister Filter Opinions???

    Phosphate Levels

Well most people i think will say a good ratio of nitrate to phosphate is about a 1:20 ratio i belive it is. It may be a 1:10 ratio but you get the point. For every 1 ppm of phosphate you want 10 to 20 ppm of nitrate in the tank. at least that is what I do, and dont have any algae problems...
