    Hitchhiker Identity

This little guy appeared after some plants were added. At first, I thought he was a deformed ramshorn with a rounded nerite-like shell instead of flatter. But then he grew. And grew. And grew. He us now triple maybe quadruple the size of any ramshorn snails I have. Could he be a ramshorn apple...

    Betta companion

The ghost shrimp will slowly vanish. Midnight betta snacks! (at least in my experience)

    Siphon per tank or shared?

I am dumping the water changer that has been an incessant PITA since day one. Buckets are faster and easier, less frustrating. So a question: one siphon to share or should each tank have its own?

    Betta bloat

Fasting will help. I have found that frozen daphnia, available at most LFS, is better than peas. It works as a laxative and the bettas seem to love eating it. My betta also eats my snail's zucchini. I have seen him poop pure zucchini! Try not to worry about your little guy just yet. Sounds...

    Simple Fix Ideas?

I need to retrofit my hex hood to hold Ecopico strips. I googled and only found one person who did this. His method was not as simple as I would like. My DIY skills and tools are basic. Any ideas are welcome. The existing bulb fixture comes completely out with two screws. That part is easy...

Bio Orb 30L what to do?

Changing the water does not harm the beneficial bacteria (biofilter). It lives on hard surfaces (filter media, substrate, plants, decorations, etc), not free floating in the water. Changing 50% will keep nitrates in check. In smaller tanks, nitrate can build to harmful levels rapidly.

    Add a school?

I left well enough alone. No sense pushing it. But now I need another tank! ;)

    Missing Guppy??

Are the drilled holes in your driftwood large enough the missing fish could have gotten in there? Maybe they got stuck in there?

Is my guppy sick and if so what is it please??

She has beautiful markings. Quarantining with clean water was a great move! I hope she pulls through for you. As for not eating, try frozen brine shrimp or frozen daphnia. Most LFS carry these and fish usually love them. Hopefully someone else will chime in with more ideas!

    Add a school?

The plecos are a bioload hog! However, my two little spaz-babies are here to stay. They are the tank comedians. The guppies seem to come and go, holding steady on their own at 10-12 adults. If they ever overrun, my LFS will gladly take them. I could remove the females. That would limit their...

    Add a school?

Was already eyeballing the guppies. I think I will leave things alone. I like where it is and there is plenty of activity. Thanks!

    Add a school?

They are a male and female. Lots of hidey holes. They actually hang out together frequently.

    Add a school?

Actually, these guys stay pretty small. They are bristlenoses, NOT commons.

    Add a school?

30 gallon, heavily planted. Runs at between 5 and 10 ppm nitrate with fertilizers. Drops to zero without. Aquaclear 30 and an Aquaclear 50. Weekly water changes, 50%. I have 2 bristlenose plecos, 4 platy, 10 guppies. Could I safely add a school of rasbora or should I let it be? Thanks for any...

Too late for my little rescues?

They see the food. Go right up to it and investigate, but never eat. Tried different brands as wells as forms.

Too late for my little rescues?

I was asked to take two red eye tetras. They were 2 of 5 that were in a 10 gallon. No water changes. Top offs infrequently. After three died, I was asked to take the last two. They came in a bag with about a half gallon of water. The pH was off the high range chart. Ammonia .25. Nitrate off...

    Red eye tetra with guppies?

These guys were alone in a 10 gallon for 3 years. Will they still school up with other red eyes? They are currently in my QT. I am trying to slowly adjust their water. It has been months since their previous owners did a pwc. Top offs only left the water extremely hard and toxic!

    Red eye tetra with guppies?

I recently was asked to rescue two fish. They turned out to be red eye tetra. I have a heavily planted 30 gallon tank with guppies and platies. I am finding mixed info about red eyes with guppies. Am I safe adding them to my tank or do I need have my LFS take them? Thanks.

    Rescuing Advice

They are red eye tetras. Came to me in a half gallon of toxic water. Ammonia 0.25, nitrAte over 160 ppm and the pH was dark dark purple, at least 8.8. It has been almost five hours of slowly adding clean water. Now they are in about 1.25 gallons with. pH of 8.2. My tap runs at 7.6, so I have...

    Rescuing Advice

A friend of mine has asked me to take her husband's two fish, with his permission. I don't have them yet, so I am not 100% sure of the species or water parameters. I know he has been lax on water changes. I know there are 2 tetras, most likely red-eye, that have been alone in a 10 gallon. Two...

Too much light with second fixture?

I have a low tech 30 gallon, moderately/heavily planted. I use Excel for a carbon source. I currently run a Finnex Ray 2, 30 inch. The plants are slow growing, with little red on the red plants and NEVER any pearling. The fixture does not spread the light to give full lighting back to front. I...
