I really think this looks like a disease and not fin nipping by the other fish. I am by no means an expert on fish diseases. I think keeping him in the breeder box is a good idea though, and I would keep doing that.

If it were my tank, I would get more danios and more guppies. It sounds counter-intuitive, but if danios are in a larger group they stick to themselves more. I'd go with five of each, which should be fine in the tank size you have. But that's just me :)

Have you noticed the danios bothering him? I've kept zebra danios for years and they act as if the other fish in the tank aren't even there...so I don't know.

Sometimes you can find wire hangers that are coated in plastic. You could cut pieces of those and fashion hooks to go over the tank.

Wal-Mart fish are not always bad, you just have to know your local store. My dwarf gourami is from Wal-Mart and he is as healthy as can be!

I agree, guppies can be surprisingly aggressive! I had to remove a molly from my guppy /molly tank because my three male guppies nearly killed it. If you do decide to add other guppies, just have a backup plan in case they don't get along.
