    I want a top-swimming, fast-moving, community fish for 29 gallons

Thanks for the recommendations, all! Gonna go shopping this weekend :)

    I want a top-swimming, fast-moving, community fish for 29 gallons

What do you recommend? I have a 29 gallon, heavily planted but with low-growing plants. My current denizens (6 rummynose tetras, 5 otocinclus) love the plants so much that they mostly just zip around their mini-jungle. Lovely to watch up close, but now I need some fish I can see from my desk...

    Substrate for planted

If you wanted to add soil to an established tank, you could mix organic potting soil and water to make mud, then freeze the mud in an ice cube tray. You can then slice up the mud cubes and place them under your existing substrate. Not too much freezy mud all at once, of course :)

    Keep your qt tank cycled?

I'm still putting together my salt tank, but my plan is to keep a fresh sponge in my sump, then use it on my sponge filter in the QT when appropriate. Of course, gotta get rid of the sponge after breaking down the QT each time, but sponges are pretty cheap.

A Crazy Attempt at a Planted Tank

I really like this tank - it's kinda chaotic and busy, but in a good way :)

    Well, frustrated with ammonia.

Are you fishless cycling? I can send you some mature media if you want..not sure what shipping costs would be but I'd guess less than $5-6 for priority mail.

    Dwarf Puffers

I got my dwarf puffers from thatpetplace.com - one fish did not survive transport and they refunded me immediately. The others are thriving and happy. I was very pleased with the transaction overall.

    Info about puffers please

Your fiancee has good taste! I completely love my dwarf puffers. They have tons of personality and they are always up to no good. From my experience, I would put 2 dps in a 10 gallon tank. They engage in a rather confusing mix of territorial chasing and peaceful gathering in a small group...

How much will it cost to start a salt water tank?

No, but I have lived long enough to know that a small investment in redundancy can save thousands of invested dollars. Two heaters for the display tank is not uncommon, one heater for the mixing station is necessary. And I already own the 4th heater, which is for the quarantine tank. A small...

How much will it cost to start a salt water tank?

I think this was directed at me? I am putting 1 heater in the sump, 1 in the tank, and 1 for my RO/DI mixing container. I work long days and I live in the NE. If a heater dies, I wanna make sure I have back-up

How much will it cost to start a salt water tank?

I am sure it can be done less expensively. Sumps can be DIY for under $100, or you can forgo them altogether. I'm pretty sure that protein skimmers are considered optional if you are doing a fish only tank. I want the flexibility to easily convert to reef next year, once I have more...

28 gallon bowfront - newbie planted tank

10 days after the last round of photos. I think I will need to trim the cabomba every couple of days....the new growth is kind of stemmy and I really want something a bit more filled out. I bought a java moss mat and cut most of it off for a wall in my low-light 29 gallon...the stripped down...

    Banggai Cardinal Fry

There's an article in this month's Aquarium Fish International about marine breeding and feeding fry. Article says phytoplankton first, then rotifers, then baby brine or artemia shrimp. The article also advises to have your cultures set up in advance :ermm: Good luck!

    planted tank light duration

I run a 4-3-5 photoperiod, with lights off during the warmest part of the day when no one is home. I have had no algae to scrape and every week I cut my cabomba to 50% of tank height, and every week it's back to the top of the tank. I dose Excel a couple of times a week but don't do...

    20 gallon planted tank-dwarf puffers

I don't use CO2, but I do use Flourish Excel. I am very happy with my plant growth but I do NOT get some of the crazy vibrant reds and super lush rapid growth that some of the high light CO2 users do. It all depends on what you are looking for. One thing that my dwarf puffer tank has is lots...

    Euthanasia

Sorry to hear about your sick fish. I have used Finquel and found it to be a very peaceful way to let a fish go. I keep a bottle on hand, but hope I will never have to use it.

    20 gallon planted tank-dwarf puffers

I have 2 tanks with sand over potting soil. While they are relatively new, I have been enjoying slow and steady growth and minimal algae. With a few nerite snails an RCS in my tank, I have yet to scrape either tank. The only cleaning I do is of my filters at the scheduled time and of the...

How much will it cost to start a salt water tank?

I am also just starting my first marine tank and am therefore starting from scratch. I am comparison shopping across vendors but not waiting for big sales, so I am sure that with a little patience you can get a lot of these items at a lower price. I am not done yet but here's what I have so...

    Anyone ever use Aqua Bid?

I have ordered from 3 different vendors on Aquabid and had a good experience with all 3. Check out the ratings and reviews for each vendor before buying!

    New obsession! Tank pics

What I love about these tanks is that they are so completely joyful. If we had a tank like this when I was a kid, I would have gotten into fishkeeping way before middle age :)

    Tank size for pea puffers

I have 3 pea puffers in a 29 gallon heavily planted tank. I thought that would be plenty of room, but the large female has decided she owns the whole tank and she spends her whole day chasing the other 2. If I had a smaller tank or fewer hiding spaces, I would worry about all of them getting...

28 gallon bowfront - newbie planted tank

OK, 3 weeks in and I have chopped heavily and moved things around a bit. Growth appears to be slow and steady, which I expected. It's hard to see because of my terrible photo skills, but the overhang of the DW causes little pockets of shade that I quite like. The cardinal tetras seem to like...

Opinions wanted: help me select an overflow box!

Thanks for the suggestions. My tank is 75 and the sump is en route, it should be 25-30 gallons (minimum 25 but not sure of exact capacity because I am not sure of the exact height of each chamber divider). I was planning on a 400 gph return pump and an overflow with slightly higher capacity...

Opinions wanted: help me select an overflow box!

I am planning my first FOWLR tank with aspirations of converting to reef in a year or so, when tank is well established. I have a 75 gallon tank and am getting ready to build a DIY 30 gallon sump/refugium. Drilling is not an option for this tank so I will need an overflow box. I'd love to...
