    neon tetras dying

Ok guys, get this. I looked in my local phone book to see what other pet stores were in town and there is actually a shop that specializes in aquariums!! That's all they sell, fish & supplies. I had them test my water and it came out just fine. So I bought 2 more neons and they have lived more...

    neon tetras dying

To answer questions posed: I am dechlorinating the water when I do water changes. We had a fishless tank for a little less than a week. Do you think that's long enough for the bacteria to start dying off? I never thought of that! Ok, so now I have info for drip acclimation plus the...

    neon tetras dying

Ryan, I tried your link but it didn't take me to anything relevant...but YouTube also said the site was undergoing maintenance so maybe that's it. I've got water test readings from just a few minutes ago: pH - 7.6 ammo - 0-.25 (it's somewhere in here...not quite yellow but it does have some...

    neon tetras dying

I'll test the water again this afternoon...and revisit the nitrate reading. No live plants, just 3 plastic ones that have been in there from the beginning. No gravel changes. Adding fish: I've floated the bag (15-20 min), then let in some tank water (15-20 min), then let the new fish swim...

    neon tetras dying

The tank has been cycled for several months. Oooh yeah, I learned about cycling the hard way back in March. Had 2 mollies in there and ended up doing major daily water changes b/c I found this forum too late (i.e., after talking to the pet store folks when buying fish). The fish survived the...

    neon tetras dying

Saturday I picked up 3 neon tetras from our lfs. We've lost 2 of them almost immediately, but the third made it. Yesterday I got 2 more to replace the first two, and one of them died within a couple hours of being in the tank, and a second fish was dead this morning when I checked. The third...

    neon tetra question

Now you guys have me thinking about shrimp...lol. I'm hijacking my daughter's tank! :) Another question...we got 3 neons today (cute little buggers!). Of course while we were at the store, we started looking at other fish. Can I mix tetras? There were some blackskirts and bloodfins that we...

    neon tetra question

I hadn't thought about that...would the shrimp be for show or are they beneficial to the tank with tetras in it?

    neon tetra question

Thanks! It's flakes...multi-colored stuff that doesn't say it's specified for any particular fish type.

    neon tetra question

I'm looking into getting some neon tetras to (re)stock my daughter's 10 gallon tank. (We just lost our molly.) I have read 6 is a good number as they are schooling fish, and with a 10 gallon I don't think I should add more than that. Thoughts? Would a 10 gallon be ok for 6 of these fish? And...

    mysterious snail appearance

I'll have to look up an image, but that might be what I have (MTS). They're super tiny and have the pointed shell. It's just weird that they appeared so suddenly! I may try the lettuce leaf (or cucumber) just to see if I can get them all in one place to see how many there are.

    turning off the filter

thanks for the responses. To answer questions: - the filter is the smallest type, for 5-15 gallons. It's WalMart brand I think, AquaTech. - the fish isn't showing any symptoms of illness other than becoming plastered against the filter. No ich, and no scale abnormalties that I can tell...

    mysterious snail appearance

No live plants, just the plastic ones that have been in there from day 1. How do you catch them?

    turning off the filter

We have a 10 gallon tank with 1 molly. Over the past couple of weeks she has been getting stuck periodically agains the intake filter. I either gently pry her loose or unplug the filter, and she then swims freely, seeming to be ok the rest of the time. I realize this is a sign that maybe she's...

    mysterious snail appearance

So, we've had our tank up and running since March. Today I noticed several snails hanging out on some (plasic) plants and on a decorative seashell. They're tiny, but I would have noticed them before. I've been scoping out the tank carefully lately, b/c the fish (a molly) that's in there has been...

    upgrading tank?

That makes sense re: the gravel. What, though, would I do with the fish we already have while I'm waiting for tank #2 to fully cycle? It would sort of be in between tanks if I can't add it to the new tank, even with the gravel & old water, right away.

    upgrading tank?

I am considering upgrading our 10 gallon tank to a 29 gallon (a friend of mine has one to give away). The upgrade would include moving the fish we have (1 molly) and adding a few more, maybe neon tetras. I'd like the new tank to be where the current tank is, and I'm wondering if it's possible to...

    fish stuck in filter intake

Thanks...it's been a very emotional night at our house! After having this one die my daughter would have a breakdown if we tried to return the fish that's left...but a larger tank might be an option. A friend said he had one he was looking to unload a while back. Maybe I should look into that...

    fish stuck in filter intake

Well, she didn't make it. I detached her 2 more times today and after the last time she just sat on the bottom of the tank until I found her a couple hours later. My 5 y/o is pretty upset...these are her fish. So now that we have 1 molly in a 10 gallon tank, is that a better situation? Any...

    fish stuck in filter intake

Oh no, she's stuck again. There def. is something wrong. What should I do?

    fish stuck in filter intake

That's what I read when I googled stuck fish...but now that she's acting normally I guess I just need to keep an eye on her. Thx all. I may look into something to put around the intake slots.

    filter cleaning question

I know...I made this mistake shortly after stocking the tank and before the cycle had completed. Learned the hard way there! Thanks for the comments. I'll just rinse it with tank water for sure, then, next time I do a water change.

    fish stuck in filter intake

This morning I noticed one of our 2 mollies was plastered to the filter intake. I thought she was dead, but then she gave a little gulp. I gently pushed her away and she detached and started swimming...a bit unsteadily, but now she seems fine. Strange. She hasn't seemed ill or lethargic...but...

    filter cleaning question

So my tank finally cycled...and both fish made it! Now I'm wondering about cleaning the filter. The directions say to replace the filter every 2-4 weeks, but I thought I read here that some of you just rinse out the filter with tank water and replace it. Will that work ok? I certainly don't want...

    speeding up cycle

Thanks for your reply, and sorry it took a while to respond...been super busy and I actually didn't log on the computer at all for 2 days. Anyway, the good news is I tested this morning and things are looking up! Ammo = 0, Nitrites = 0 (whoo hoo!!) and Nitrates = 0-5. This is week 9 of the...
