From freshwater to saltwater...where to start?

Sounds good. I just started tearing down the tank because it had previously sprung a leak which is kind of what prompted the rebuild. It is a 76 gallon Oceanic half-round. Not sure where the leak came from so I'm problem going to need to completely re-seal. When I got the tank it was missing the...

From freshwater to saltwater...where to start?

Just thought of another question, how does regular maintenance differ between freshwater and saltwater aquariums?

From freshwater to saltwater...where to start?

I actually have pool filter sand in the tank now from the previous freshwater set up. Can that be used? Of course, I would rinse it first. About the rock, how much is needed for a 76gallon tank? What is meant by "live rock"? What is the purple and blue colors I have seen on some rock? I am...

From freshwater to saltwater...where to start?

Ok so I have decided I think to convert one of my freshwater tanks to saltwater. I have a lot of freshwater experience but this be my first venture into salt. I'd like to consider a reef and this is where I am at. I have an Oceanic 76 gallon half-round tank w/ I think a 30g sump. As far as...

    Planted tank with Angelfish...Tank mates?

Good advice and noted! I had considered that. I'm no stranger to Severums. I had an 11" Gold not to long ago and yes they need room. I had him in a 76 gallon half round. My thoughts were to get a much smaller one and then down the road, as he grows, upgrade the tank. That would give me the...

    Planted tank with Angelfish...Tank mates?

I went ahead and three a school of black skirted tetras that I had in another tank. After doing a little more research, keying in on larger fish, I'm thinking about adding s Severum. My biggest concern then though isn't so much the Angels, but the plants being uprooted.

    Planted tank with Angelfish...Tank mates?

I've read that to be the smallest size tank for a severum. I haven't found anything regarding it's tank mates though other than they can be a community fish. I have had a sevrum before and kep him in a 76 gallon with a Jack Dempsey. For the first few weeks that was an iffy match up but they got...

    Planted tank with Angelfish...Tank mates?

Those are good suggestions and not off the table but I am trying to think of larger tank mates. For instance, Gold Severum. Has anyone every tried those with Angels?

    Planted tank with Angelfish...Tank mates?

I've had multiple aquariums for several years so not a newbie. However, I have just set up my first planted freshwater tank and introduced a pair of Gold Veiled Angels. The tank is a 54-gallon quarter round with canister filter. What other fish would make good tank mates? Preferably I would like...

    Need ideas for 76!

I had the EXACT same group but added a 10" Gold Severum to the mix. The Severum and Livingstonii got in a few fights occasionally but overall did well together. Made a great looking 79g with the 4. Unfortunately, I lost the Severum just today and afraid I may lose my Livingstonii as well. Heater...

    Made a HUGE mistake today!!!!

Well I thought I'd update....my 9" Jack Dempsey seems to be doing fine as well as my Placo. I lost the 10" Gold Severum. He was seemingly struggling but OK when I left for work this morning but didn't last until I got home. Now I'm worried about 1 of my favorites, a 9" Livingstonii. He's laying...

    Made a HUGE mistake today!!!!

I have a water valve plumbed into my tank to make replacing evaporated water quick and easy. When I came home for lunch I turned it off and totally forgot all about it. When I came home tonight I discovered it. Not concerned about the mess but my fish are laying on the bottom! The water got WAY...

    Lighting question for my 76!

Good info and I appreciate. It all makes sense. Let me ask this though...because it doesn't seem bright enough. Could it hurt anything if I were to leave the fluorescents in there but then add a single 100w MH just to help brighten things up a bit? Would it hurt the fish in anyway?

    Lighting question for my 76!

Mog you mention that what I currently have is overkill. Why? What would you suggest considering I don't the tank lighting is bright enough?? Also, can a particular lighting not be good for the fish? For instance it sounds like your saying halides would be fine on saltwater but not freshwater...

    Lighting question for my 76!

I'm thinking about making a change to the lighting in my 76 half round. Currently I have a 3' Coral Life fixture with a 10000k 31w T5 HO and an Acrylic 31w T5 HO. This is a freshwater cichlid tank which has a Jack Dempsey, a Gold Severum, a Livingstonii, and a Pleco. I have never felt that my...

76g half round mixed tank This is my 76 gallon half round w/ a 30 gallon sump. It has a heater and a powerhead. I have scaped it using artifical plants, driftwood, pool filter sand, egg rock, and native Kansas limestone. It's inhabitants include a 10" Jack Dempsey, a 13" Plecostomus, an 8"...
