I would try treating and testing the water straight from the source. My ammo goes to a .25 every time I do a water change just from the chloramines in the local water.
You could do that. You would have to add a bit more gravel. And whatever new filter you get you just put the sponge/mesh part of your old filter in front so you don't lose bacteria.
You could keep him in there for a while. They are indeed a smaller than normal pleco. Being that they only get around 7". You could keep him for bit if you're planning on getting a bigger tank someday. Like in the next year or so.
As far as adding corys with a pleco I wouldn't. There's not...
Yeah, I know. But for some reason it hasn't died yet. Haha didn't know it wasn't fully aquatic until after we got it. But as long as it isn't in any shade and gets good lighting it seems to do alright.

I have some in my 26. Been in there since we started the tank. 1 of the 4 started looking a little frail so we pulled it. But despite what everyone said they seem to be doing quite alright.

With 2 males you would have to add 6 females to counter the agression. Otherwise the males with harass the females to death (literally).
You're best bet is to pick up 3 more male platys. A general rule of thumb for community fish is keeping them in groups of odd numbers, with no less than 5 in...
Don't get to down about it. They're hard to come by. Nobody knows how to captive breed them so they're all wild caught. Takes time. But in the end you have something more that a WalMart fish. To me its worth the wait.
